Shopify Hire Business - Barcode Scanning and Automation

I’m new to these forums - hope an expert out there can help me!

Background / Context

My business model is a hire business on Shopify. The customer will choose a product they want to hire for either 6 weeks or 8 weeks. They nominate the hire period and place their order.

I pack the order and send it out to them with a return postage satchel accompanying the product, so they can return it at the conclusion of their hire period.

Problem

I want to be able to generate a barcode for each individual product, and track which product I’ve sent to each customer.

I want some automation, so that I can go into the customers order, scan the barcode, and it will attribute the product to that customer. It will automatically update my stock levels.

When the product is returned, I want to open the parcel, “receive” the stock item back by scanning it, and for the order associated with that product to automatically update its status to received or completed (and also replenish my inventory).

What I Need

I know there are various apps that will do basic inventory management but I’m not sure which one is best to use which will fulfil my needs for updating the order status and the inventory.
