Shopify Newsletter - customer already in database message

Currently when a customer signs up to the standard Shopify newsletter subscription form they get a success message.

However if they are already subscribed they get no feedback / message whatsoever. Shopify Support have confirmed this is expected behaviour, which is really rubbish UX.

Has anyone come up with a solution to this?
