Shopify Payments for POS in Estonia

Hi! I was really happy to hear that Shopify Payments finally became available for the Estonian market in 2025. This gave me the confidence to start planning not only my online store but also a small brick-and-mortar shop. I wanted to use Shopify POS as my point-of-sale system for the seamless product information sync between my online and offline sales.

I even went ahead and bought the full Shopify POS bundle set (POS terminal, barcode scanner, receipt printer, etc.) after watching several videos where store owners praised the POS terminal as a must-have for smooth in-store operations.

However, after setting everything up, I was shocked to discover that while Shopify Payments is indeed available in Estonia for online stores, it does not extend to Shopify POS. This means I cannot use the POS terminal to accept payments in-store, which essentially makes the hardware useless in my case and prevents me from creating the seamless customer experience I was aiming for.

Could you please clarify when Shopify Payments for POS will be available in Estonia?
I have already invested in the hardware, and I’m sure many other Estonian merchants are in the same situation, eager to use Shopify POS as intended.

Thank you in advance for your support and any information you can share!

Hey there!

This is Aaron from the Retail Team here at Shopify!

Thank you so much for sharing your question within our Shopify Community.

You are absolutely correct with your research in that Shopify Payments did become available for Estonia earlier this year, but only available for the Online Store and not the Shopify POS app. More information regarding this can be found in our Available payment methods with Shopify Payments in Estonia resource. Additionally, this is also the reason that hardware purchased from our Shopify Hardware Store cannot be shipped directly to Estonia.

At this particular moment, merchants in Estonia would need to look into using an external card terminal with a third-party payment processor. This would mean that although you would be able to create a POS Order with the Shopify POS app, accepting in-person payments would need to be done through an external card terminal, making it become a case of where the order will be created within Shopify, but the payment would need to be collected outside of Shopify. For more information on this, and what order details are tracked when processing payments through an external card terminal, we would recommend referring to our Activate custom payments for Shopify POS resource.

With regards to the hardware that you have purchased, you can refer to our Return Policy, depending on the region that you had selected for the shipment of the hardware. For further support, we would recommend that you reach out to our Support Team through our Shopify Help Center.

Tes the payment types are activated (debit / credit). Even at some point it says that Shopify Payments are set up but when I want to continue setting up the card terminal it gets back to the loop of setting up shopify payments.

It’s really frustrating. Thought that I could use the terminal just for a client side screen but only that isn’t possible either. Guess it’ll have to wait until POS payments are also available in Estonia or register a Finnish company to be able to accept card payments via Shopify

Hey there,

Thank you so much for the update! I completely understand your frustration with this.

The Shopify POS app itself would require Shopify Payments to be activated to connect the POS Terminal, and likely the reason why it is in a loop when attempting to connect it since it is not available for the Shopify POS app. Additionally, the POS Terminal cannot be used as in a “side screen” mode.

Setting up a Finnish business might be doable, but we would highly recommend referring to our Shopify Payments for Finland resource to view the requirements as local rules and regulations are different for each region, and some of the information that is required might be region-specific, in that it might require Finnish information and documents.

With regards to the hardware, I completely understand how paying for hardware that will not work at this moment is not ideal. For this, we would highly recommend reaching out to our Support Team through our Shopify Help Center and attach a link to this Shopify Community post for reference. If you have access to the Shopify POS, you can also complete the following steps:

  1. From the POS app, tap
  2. Tap Support
  3. Tap Contact Support
