Hey all. I have a shop where I sell computers, and we’ve recently added some smaller items.
Our computers charge around $60-80~ for UPS Ground shipping, and are around 35-50 lbs.
We recently added a small accessory that is only 5 lbs, yet the UPS Ground shipping is around $45-80+ which makes no sense since the weight and size of the package are dramatically smaller.
Does anyone know what causes this, and how to fix this? We want Shopify to charge for this item and quote out a shipping cost just as it does for our PCs, but I know for sure $45 for a 5 lb package is not anywhere close to the correct rate.
Hi @mycelus !
There are several reasons that can cause this issue. The most common one is the package section under your shipping and delivery settings. If you have a default Packages, it automatically uses the shipping cost for the default package size. I highly suggest that you set it up in between the size for PC and the size for smaller packages otherwise, I highly suggest that you reach out to Shopify support team so they can further take a look at your shipping and delivery settings and check any issue that might be causing this.
I ended up having a $25 handling fee, which was causing me to have higher than intended shipping rates. I created a separate shipping rate for the other items without the handling fee.
I faced a similar issue with my online store. Even small items can have surprisingly high shipping costs. One thing I discovered is that some carriers add handling fees or base rates that don’t scale linearly with weight.
