When creating a product in Shopify, how to “Tags” help in SEO? Is it better to simply put a brand or the more detail the better? For example: “Camera” vs. “Nikon FE 35mm SLR Body” ?
Topic summary
The discussion addresses whether Shopify product tags contribute to SEO and how detailed they should be.
Key Points:
-
Tags don’t directly impact SEO: Search engines don’t index Shopify tags, so they won’t improve rankings like product titles, meta descriptions, or alt text would.
-
Where to focus SEO efforts: Detailed keywords (e.g., “Nikon FE 35mm SLR Body” rather than just “Camera”) should be placed in product titles, descriptions, and image alt text—areas Google actually crawls.
-
Tags serve internal purposes: They’re useful for site search and product filtering, which can enhance user experience.
-
Potential issues with tag pages: One participant noted that after a Shopify theme update, tag URLs (like
/blog/tag/pulse-exhibition) were automatically created, causing problems. This highlights the need for a clear strategy before implementing tags.
Consensus: Only use tags if you have a specific plan for managing tag pages; otherwise, avoid them and prioritize SEO-friendly content in standard product fields.
Tags in Shopify aren’t directly indexed by search engines, so they don’t boost SEO the way page titles or meta descriptions do. However, they can still help with internal site search and filtering, which affects user experience.
For SEO, it’s better to focus on using detailed keywords like Nikon FE 35mm SLR Body in your product title, description, and alt text, that’s where Google actually looks. Tags are more about organizing your store for your visitors than ranking in search.
Hi - I agree with RKon12.
We migrated from Magento 5 years ago - we had a lot of tags in blogs, and imported them.
Recently in a theme update we have found Shopify creating urls with tags in - such as /blog/tag/pulse-exhibition
Which has been a bit problematic
Great for site search, but I think you need a clear plan for using them.
++ what people are saying here
Don’t add tags unless you have a plan for the tags pages. Otherwise I would not add them.
