The new Shopify GA4 integration - and use of Google Tag Manager

hello,

I’m interested in the right way to use Google Tag Manager and the new GA4 integration which was released recently. I have been using GTM and GA4 for some time now, and I have a lot of my own bespoke tags which I am keen to continue to use for my bespoke reporting.

What is the correct approach now with the new GA4 integration, as that seems to want you to move away from Google Tag Manager. I’m thinking that I should keep my old GTM config, but remove any conflicting tags (such as “item view” ; “add to cart” etc) and just keep my bespoke stuff in GTM?

Interested in peoples thoughts

Thanks

Martin

Hey Martin,

Start with the GA4 integration as your baseline. So, use Tag Assistant to see what fires from what. Disable anything from GTM that doubles up. Alternatively, you may want to disable all GA4 tags in GTM first, review what gets pushed through, then patch up the holes you want with GTM.
