Trying to add more pages with sub categories

Hi all,

I am very new to this and I am watched a few tutorials but nothing appears to work properly or at all.

What I like to do is add more pages like Mics, Accessories, Drums etc and then have sub categories. No matter what I do in the theme at the top of the page it says only “Home” and “Categories” and when you go in to categories it just shows all of the products.

Been trying to get this sorted for two days with no success.

Hey, @THEJARVIS !

This is Summer from the Social Care team at Shopify. Welcome to Shopify Community! I would love to help you out with the navigation in your store.

How did you add the additional pages to your menu? Did you go to the Navigation area in your admin? If you did and the pages are not appearing on the main menu, there’s a likelihood that a new menu was created that is currently not connected to your theme.

Your store comes with default menus, a Main menu, and a Footer menu, which you can find in the Online Store > Navigation page in your Shopify admin. The main menu contains the Home and Catalog menu items and is usually connected to the header through the theme; while the footer menu is connected to the footer. To have your menu items appear on your website, you need to add them to the menu that’s currently connected to the theme. Otherwise, if you created a different menu, you can connect that to the theme.

You can follow the steps below to add the menu items to the menu that’s currently connected to the theme.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Navigation.
  2. Select Main menu or select the menu that contains the menu items you currently see on your website.
  3. Click Add menu item.
  4. Enter a name for the menu item.
  5. Click the link field and select the page you want to link the menu item to.
  6. Click Add.
  7. Click Save menu.

If you wish to connect a menu to your theme, you can go through these steps:

This is a general guide for Shopify themes. The steps may be slightly different on third-party themes.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes.
  2. Click Customize beside the theme you wish to edit.
  3. On the left sidebar, click Header or Sidebar or Action bar.
  4. On the right sidebar, select Change > Change menu under Menu.
  5. Select the menu you wish to connect to the theme.
  6. Click Select.
  7. Click Save.

As for sub-categories, or dropdown menus, you can create them within the menu you’re using. You can simply add the dropdown menu item by clicking Add menu item and then drag it underneath the menu item that you would like to use as a top-level menu item. For a detailed guide on this, you may refer to this page.

While you’re working on your menus, don’t forget to add your store policies, specifically the Refund Policy, Shipping Policy, Terms of Service, and Privacy Policy, so customers can find the information they need before purchasing from your store. You can create the policies through the Settings > Legal page in your Shopify admin. Once you have created them, you can add them to your menu as per the steps above, or the guide on this page.

In addition to the policies, make sure to add an About Us page and a Contact Us page. It’s essential to have these key pages as they keep your customers informed about your business and how to reach out to you when they have a question. We have a guide on creating an About Us page on this page and a Contact Us page on this page. Again, you may add these to your menu via the steps above.

I hope this helps! Do let me know if you have questions about the above by responding to this post.
