What are some good alternatives to the SocketMobile S700 for POS scanning?

Has anyone found barcode scanner alternatives to the SocketMobile S700? I would think that any scanner in SPP mode should work, but have not yet experimented with anything. Ideally, I’d like to find something that I can attach to a rugged iPad case so that we can pick up our ipads and walk around the store and transact away from the POS station. The POS Go is a little slow for us and I want to come up with something else. Any ideas?

Allegedly the zebra ds2278 will work according to support, one guy finally admitted. I just got mine in and will be trying it out shortly. The socket mobile scanners are a complete joke and a slap in the face of someone running anything more than a hobby pop up shop.

Unbelievable that Shopify supports one junk scanner. This may be the last straw of Shopify’s nonsense for me.

Tell us how it went with the ds2278, I was also told in customer support that it was not compatible

Did it work? very interested to know for our business.

Eager to know too on how it goes. One of our stores Socket Mobile is giving me a really hard time.

We use this misc brand 1D scanner. Just make sure you get iOS compatible if you’re using POS on and iPad. It works fine with Shopify POS. But for whatever reason scanning a barcode only brings up the product, not the specific size/variant (even though size is included in the barcode). But from what I read online this is a Shopify POS issue, not a fault in the scanner. @Jorge-Yen @AnthonyCGS @t33mu

Hi ! Did the DS2278 work with you ? The support team said that it’s compatible but I am really not sure since it’s not referenced on their “compatible hardware” page ?

Hi, just wondering how you got shopify POS to recognise this scanner, it’s not one on the list in the app when you try to link it. Thanks.

I have just purchased this scanner. It technically does work, but only if you connect the cradle to the USB/USBC socket on your tablet. It does not work via Bluetooth unfortunately, but there is the advantage of having the scanner ‘wireless’ from the cradle (the cradle connects to tablet via USB).

It works, but via USB connection only (not via Bluetooth). So might as well save the cash and just use the wired option recommended by Shopify Tested as at time of this post. I simply refuse to spend the money being asked for the Socket scanner, so happy to stay wired for now.

You need to connect it via USB and treat it like the other Zebra Scanner. Can’t do it via Bluetooth unfortunately.

Totally agree.

I tried today, it works via USB only (cradle to tablet). Bluetooth does not work.

I am using IPAD for my Shopify POS.

Can you advise how to setup DS2278 using Shopify POS? I have tried the normal setup method in the POS app => More > Connectivity > Set up hardware > Barcode scanner, but cannot locate the scanner.

Thank you so much.

Hi Adrian, I connected the scanner via USB cable to an Android tablet, then selected the Zebra 2D option (can’t remember the model, but the wired one that Shopify recommends). I had to ‘pretend’ it was the recommended model, if that makes sense. Unsure about specifics with iPAD but I’d imagine it would be the same.

Thank you for your reply.

In the setup page, it doesn’t have the barcode brand or model selection, it just goes straight to the connection page, and it asked me to scan the barcode that the page shows up, which it says will hear 3 beeps if the connection is successful (which I didn’t hear in my case).

I hear different saying, some people say the DS2278 is compatible with Shopify, and some say it doesn’t. They are both DS2200 series, so I thought the difference is wired and wireless version.

I have just followed the instructions provided by @DT1 I pretended my zebra scanner was the supported model and successfully connected a zebra DS3678 wireless rugged scanner

How were you able to have it add items to your cart directly from scanning? I have the Zebra DS2278 connected to my IPad through the USB-C port but it is only reading the numbers in the search bar when scanned and not adding it to the cart. Any advice?

Have you connected it in the shopify pos settings under hardware? You need to click the zebra option even though its not the same model and follow the on screen setup, then it adds the items directly to cart, If you have it plugged in to the usb with oput this it might just be emulating a usb keyboard. Something I have noticed is that the socket scanner provides feedback when you scan an unknown barcode but the unsupported zebra scanner does not!
