Every business is different therefore the answer to your question may vary. I am very interested to see how other contributors answer this for us.

Shopify’s developers have created a great platform with the sole-purpose of making commerce better for everybody. With that said, we have provided you right away with the core features necessary to build, run, and scale your business so I recommend you focus on these features first when building your store and when the time comes that our core features are not giving you what you want, then that’s when we would recommend you use apps to help you achieve these business-specific goals.

If this is a limitation you are already experiencing however, I am all ears to hear what obstacles you are facing then from there, we can all find apps or workarounds to help you in these. In the meantime however, I did find this outside source that articles a great list of apps that can help you optimize our features as well.
