Hello, what is it in the Shopify settings that determines what Shopify Payments uses as international customers/charges and charges international fees, is it the store address under “Store Details” in settings?
Our main customer base is American, but we’re currently set up as a Canadian company. Weighing the impact of setting store address as US vs Canada. If we set the store address as US based and use Shopify Payments, we’d need an EIN.
Interesting in learning about any other impacts of setting store address from US vs Canada in the Details section. Thanks.
The payment gateways available for use in your store would indeed be based on the country entered in the address in the store settings as you suspected.
This would include the version of Shopify Payments (eg USA vs Canada) available, and the type of bank account, identity, or business documents you’d need to submit as you also noted here.
The most important of these would be a proof of a physical address from which your (for eg, US) operations take place, as usually without this an application would not be processed
One example of the differences in Shopify Payments Canada vs the USA would be that Canadian accounts can get paid out in CAD or USD, whereas Shopify Payments USA accounts would only be able to get paid out in USD.
I checked this out internally for you to see what info we can share on the type of bank account and currency supported by Shopify Payments in the USA.
It would be a requirement for Shopify Payments USA that you use a checking account with a physical bank based in the USA.
While it is possible to sell and get paid in different currencies using Shopify Payments, for the USA the only available payout currency would be USD (CAD, etc not being an option).
As such, whether you’re based in the USA or overseas, if you want to use Shopify Payments USA you would need a USD bank based in that country in order to do so.
Let me know if you have any other questions about this or anything else Shopify-related!
