What is the best way to start a Shopify store if I am under 18?

I am 16 and am interested in starting a Shopify store, though I know from the terms of service that it requires users to be 18.
I have seen that I would be able to make the store under a parent’s Shopify account, and add myself as a staff member, but unfortunately I don’t think this will be an option as I will be using a basic account, and won’t have access to staff accounts.

If a parent were to make a Shopify account in their name, would I be able to link my own bank account to the Shopify store to receive payouts, and pay fees?

If not to pay fees, will I at least be able to receive payouts to my bank account (so that this will not affect my parent’s taxes, and all income will be under my name).

If Shopify does allow this (Shopify Account under parent’s name, Payouts to my own bank account), would this work in Australia? I would technically be receiving all payments, but since the store is under my parent’s name would they still have to report this income as being received by them?

Thanks in advance!

Hi @jmes !

This is Roan, and I will be giving you some insights regarding this. First off, I would like to say that it is great that you have plans in opening an online business of your own at such a young age.

Regarding your payout concerns, since you are under 18, your parents will have to setup and maintain the Shopify account. Their legal name and other needed information will be all about them. Therefore, any revenue will impact your parent’s taxes since it will be under their name (and not your own) because, the account should be created using your parent’s banking and personal information to be verified as they are the listed account owner**.**

I would advise having a conversation with your parents regarding the handling of any proceeds from sales. Here is a help document for your reference as well:
