while making sure all the apps work correctly? Can someone recommend a developer please?
Hello @NIRO33 ,
Upgrading to a 2.0 theme will be beneficial for CRO and having more customization options. But changing the theme can hurt your current organic ranking if not done correctly. You have 2 options to upgrade your store’s theme to 2.0 version:
1) Upgrading a Premium theme:
-
These themes have been switched to 2.0 versions. You can duplicate your current theme, and upgrade to a new version from here:
-
The code changes done by you won’t be applied to the upgraded version. You would need to compare with copied version and carry over the custom sections and changes.
2) Change the theme:
If you wish to change the theme, you would need a different approach that requires to be more careful.
- I would suggest you to make a list of pages getting orgnaic traffic and being indexed by search engines. For example changes on checkout and cart won’t matter but a product or blog page should have a similar layout.
- Make sure those pages have the same [URL] handle for the new theme. Or you should redirect the old [URL] to the corresponding page. For example: http://example.com usually redirects to https://example.com .
- You should also make sure those pages have similar layout. This includes headings, content, images, videos, links and general layout. New themes are usually better optimized regarding accessibility so if you apply corresponding sections and apps, that’ll be enough.
- Apps are tied to your store so they’ll apply to the new theme. If the app requires it, you would still need to add the app in a section or block like most review apps require.
As long as page [URL] are same or redirected and page layout isn’t changed much, you can feel free to publish the new theme without risking SEO. It may take a while for search engine bots to crawl your new theme so I wouldn’t suggest you to make big changes to your new theme until everything is settled and works as supposed to.
I hope you can upgrade to a 2.0 theme seamlessly and good luck! Feel free to reach out to me if you need any further assistance.
