What keeps you going when competitors seem to be doing better?
The fact is I’m not competing with them, I have my own lane.
My only competition is yesterday’s me, and I’m always winning ![]()
I think the only person I should compare myself to is my own self. There will always be competitors who do better than us. But if we’ve done better than we did yesterday, I already consider that a victory
Take more measures to optimize our product and pay attention to feedback from customers, to achieve a better progress than competitors.
I’m not competing with anyone else, I’m competing with myself. My goal is always to be better than I was yesterday.”
I focus on my own growth and progress. Everyone has their own pace, and comparing myself to others only distracts me from improving what I can control.
What keeps me going is focusing on my own progress instead of comparisons. Competitors can be motivating, but I remind myself that every business has its own pace, strengths, and challenges. By learning from what works for others while doubling down on my unique value, I stay motivated to grow step by step.
I try to remember the horse with blinders analogy. Racehorses wear them so they don’t get distracted by the horses next to them, they only focus on the finish line.
When I see competitors winning, I remind myself that I’m seeing their highlight reel, not their behind the scenes. I have no idea if they are actually profitable or if they are burnt out. I keep going by tracking my own small wins. As long as I am better than I was last month, I’m winning.
Yes! Everyone’s path and timing is unique. We’re all exactly where we need to be right now, even if it does not always feel like it. But it’s important to keep moving forward and trusting the process.
I usually focus on my own work, and my goal is to get better every day. Looking too much at competitors would wear you out, and they might be in a much worse situation. Always focus on yourself and use competitors to learn from.
One way to stay motivated can be to look for areas where you can differentiate from your competitors, rather than trying to beat them at the exact same thing; finding ways to one-up them.
Customer experience is one example. For instance, sending your customers packing videos of their order being packed can be a simple way to make the post-purchase experience feel more personal. If a customer receives a short video of their own order being packed, that is something they probably do not get from most other shops.
It gives the customer something that feels personal and cared for, which helps your shop stand out. It also gives them something they can share on social platforms.
There are many ways to differentiate, but packing videos are one example that can be started for free and do not need to add much time compared with packing the order anyway.
