Whats the best way to offer free shipping only on specific items

Topic summary

A store owner selling handmade jewelry and vintage clothing wants to offer free shipping exclusively on jewelry items (smaller, cheaper to ship) while maintaining standard shipping charges for bulkier vintage clothing. They attempted using Shopify’s shipping profiles but encountered configuration issues that disrupted their clothing shipping rates.

Solutions Proposed:

  • Shipping Profiles (Native Shopify): One user successfully created a custom shipping profile by navigating to Settings > Shipping and delivery, creating a profile for specific products, adding shipping zones, and setting a $0 flat rate with no conditions. Shopify staff recommended reviewing their shipping profiles guide to avoid product overlap between profiles.

  • Third-Party Apps: Two apps were suggested:

    • Advanced Free Shipping: Allows product-based rules with easy on/off toggles, customizable conditions (minimum purchase, customer groups), and selective rate discounting. Includes a 10-day free trial and setup video.
    • Discount Depot: Offers shipping discounts based on products, collections, customers, cart value, plus additional discount features (BOGO, volume discounts).

Status: Multiple viable solutions provided; original poster has not confirmed which approach they implemented.

Im kinda stuck and hoping someone can help me out. I run a small online store where I sell a mix of handmade jewelry and vintage clothing. Recently I decided that I want to offer free shipping on just the jewelry items since they’re smaller and cheaper to ship but Im totally fine with charging for shipping on the vintage clothing because it can be a bit bulky and expensive to send out.

Ive been digging around the settings and playing with shipping profiles but I cant seem to figure out how to apply free shipping to just the jewelry products without messing up the shipping rates for the clothes. I created a separate shipping profile for the jewelry but then the shipping rates for the clothes got all mixed up.

Im starting to feel like Im going in circles here. Plus I dont want to keep playing with shipping profiles as I may want to turn this on and off quickly.

Is there a way to create a shipping rule that only applies to certain products in my catalog? Maybe an app for that? If so any recomendations on which app would be the best for this kinda thing. I just want it to be easy to set up basically, oh and choose which rate to make free?

Also if anyone has done this before Id love to hear how you set it up. Im a bit of a newbie at this so any tips would be super apreciated. Thanks

Thanks for reaching out, @Hayden20 .

It’s definitely possible to set-up product specific rates and separating them into their own shipping profile is certainly the best way to do it.

It sounds like when you created the new shipping profile, you perhaps added products that shouldn’t be in there, or overlapped them with items in the original shipping profile. Hi @Hayden20

Advanced Free Shipping, can help you set up free shipping for specific products in your Shopify store.

If you don’t want to use shipping profiles, or if you want to easily turn shipping discounts off/on, our app would be a great choice.

Here’s how it works:

Product-Based Rules: You can create rules that apply free shipping only to selected products.
Easy Toggle: Quickly enable or disable free shipping for specific items without messing up your other shipping settings.
Customizable Conditions: Set conditions like minimum purchase amount or specific customer groups to qualify for free shipping.

Choose Rates: Select which rates you want to discount, whilst leaving others as per normal

If you need any more details or a step-by-step guide, feel free to ask!

@RMedia thanks for the quick reply! Yes Im looking for something that very easy to set up.

Before I dive in I have a few questions if thats ok

  1. How easy is it to set up and use for someone whos not super “techy”?

  2. Can I specify free shipping for just my jewelry items and not my vintage clothing?

3.How does it handle different shipping zones and rates?

@Hayden20 no problem, yes it’s a very easy setup. We have a short ‘how-to’ video in the dashboard to give you an overview of how to setup your shipping discount.

To specify particular products you simply create a checkout condition (we have many to choose from such as product tags, collection, or simply select the products you want).

To choose which rates to discount, again simply choose your rates from your rate selector.

We have a 10 day free trial, so have a go and reach out if you need some extra help!
Thanks

Hi @Hayden20 If you are still looking for a solution to this, you can try using the Discount Depot App, which allows you to give shipping discount based on the specific product, specific collection, specific customer, groups of customers, total cart value and many more option to look for. Not only Shipping discounts it also offers normal product discounts based on specific products, collections, customer tags, volume discount, BOGO and many more.

Let me know if you find this suitable as per your requirment.

Not sure if this will work for you but it worked for me.

I created a custom shipping profile. Settings>Shipping and delivery> under shipping clicked “create custom profile”. Give it a name and under products select the products you would like to add. You can add or remove products at any time. Then add a shipping zone, select your market. Lastly, click on “Add Rate” and setup the flat rate $0 shipping fee with no conditions.

Hope this helps you out!!

Establishing unambiguous terms while preserving profitability is the best approach to provide free delivery on particular items. In order to prevent shipping expenses from reducing earnings, retailers can offer free shipping on high-margin items.
Offering it on top-selling or promotional items is an additional strategy to increase sales. Companies can also set a minimum purchase amount or apply discount codes to qualify for free shipping. Platforms like Shopify and WooCommerce enable companies to effectively automate free shipping for certain products by utilizing sophisticated e-commerce settings. Atlantic International Express promises secure shipment and timely support to efficiently handle such issues.
