Why aren't customer refunds processing correctly on my eCommerce platform?

Topic summary

  • Main issue: Refunds initiated in Shopify are marked as processed and deducted from the merchant’s payout, but customers report not receiving funds for over two weeks. This is causing customer frustration and leaves merchants without a fix.

  • Scope: At least two merchants experienced the same behavior. Tags indicate the issue relates to Shopify Payments and fulfillment.

  • Context: The original poster has used Shopify for two years and expects refunds to reach customers promptly. Current behavior suggests a delay between refund authorization and funds landing in customers’ accounts.

  • Proposed workaround: A participant shared a third-party app (Neat Credit) that issues store credit via repeatable discount codes acting like a wallet. This can provide instant value to customers while keeping cash in the business, but it does not satisfy customers who require cash refunds.

  • Key terms: Shopify Payments is Shopify’s payment processing and payout system. “Payout deduction” means the refund amount is subtracted from the merchant’s next disbursement, which can occur before a customer sees funds on their card.

  • Status: No official guidance or resolution from Shopify in the thread. The discussion remains open, with merchants seeking an explanation for refund delays and actionable support from Shopify.

Hello, I have been using Shopify for 2 years now.
There is an issue I have, when I click to refund a customer it says the refund has happened and will be deducted from my payout. But I’ve had 3 customers complain saying they haven’t gotten their money back in over 2 weeks.
This is a big issue because my customers get angry and I can’t do anything about it, it’s the system not working correctly I suppose. Could someone help me to fix this asap?
Thanks in advance!

I have the same issue!! any resolution?

Let’s hope Shopify helps with this question!

Meanwhile, I built an app to solve this problem: https://apps.shopify.com/neat-credit
If you want to instantly refund a customer and keep money in the business (and generate some extra), then you can create repeatable discount codes that act like a wallet until the refund is spent in your store. Of course some customers might still want cash, but in a lot of cases people are happy to spend it in your store again.
