I see others were having the same problem, but no solid resolution posted.
Our store has the “Decline charges that fail CVV verification” checked in Fraud Prevention. We recently had a purchase on our site where the CVV verification is listed as “unavailable”. We have received a chargeback for that order.
Why was it allowed to go through?
I’m guessing there is some semantics here around a successful CVV verification not being the same as not failed CVV.

So sorry to hear about your recent chargeback. Regarding the CVV situation, it highly depends on how the customer checked out. Was it paid using an alternative payment method like Paypal? If so, it would make sense that CVV information is not available. Also, depending on the payment gateway or card company not all provide the CVV information.

The purchase was through Shop Pay.
That’s what I meant when I mentioned semantics above. By checking that box to decline on failure, I would have expected the order be declined if the CVV wasn’t successful. But I’m guessing that success != not failed.

Being a store owner you must be willing to avoid cancelling fake negative alerts in order not to lose money. I’m suggesting you put these orders for further investigation with the service we’ve created - ask for their identification document, proof of address and a selfie (free trial available) prior shipping the goods or cancelling the order.
