I was looking at my abandoned checkouts and notice that the shipping was $20, all of my items are already weighed on the backend. When I took a deeper look, it defaulted to a package that I used once in the past. I clearly lost a sale because of this. Is there away not to have a default package?
I understand you’re experiencing issues with default shipping packages affecting your abandoned checkouts. It’s possible your default package is the incorrect size. To adjust this:
From your Shopify admin, head to ‘Settings’ then select ‘Shipping and delivery’.
In this section, scroll down to the ‘Saved Packages’ section.
Select the three dots next to the package you want to set as the default and select ‘Set as Default.’
Finally, locate the package that was causing the issue and click on the three dots, then the ‘Delete’ button.
Make sure to test the checkout process after making any changes to ensure everything is working as expected.
In the meantime, I recommend you consider offering free shipping thresholds or promotional shipping rates to incentivise customers to complete their purchases. Additionally, providing clear and transparent shipping information on your website can help set customer expectations and reduce cart abandonment.
I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any further questions or need additional assistance.
The question was whether there is a way to not use a default package size. I guess the answer is a big fat NO. It would be real nice if there were a way to select a different default package size for every shipping profile. Because there is not, the shipping charges that Shopify calculates can be wildly inaccurate. For example, some of the items that we sell we can ship in a small padded envelope. Others require a large box. When we default to the envelope, we lose money on shipping on the large items. When we default to the box, we sales because of the outrageous calculated shipping rates. Shopify needs to fix this basic issue.
That is correct, there is no option to not have a default package size when using calculated rates. I definitely agree it would be beneficial to have different defaults for different profiles. Unfortunately, until that is a reality, the only option to achieve what you’re looking for is to use a third party app such as Advanced Shipping Rules.
Hi there, we are having the same issue and have lost sales because of it (shown in the abandoned checkouts). But we also have a different issue with the default package. We have changed the weight of our default package so that it doesn’t throw off our weight-based pricing when customers are adding multiple products (greeting cards) to their cart. But for some reason, even after changing the weight of the default package to 1g and testing the checkout process, customers are still being charged a very high shipping rate that corresponds to a much higher weight. We’ve done everything we can, but cannot solve the issue. Can you/your team help? Thanks.
There definitely could be a different issue occurring based upon what you have provided. Shipping settings can be extremely sensitive. As such, I recommend reaching out to our live team who can pull up your exact settings and troubleshoot the issue. If needed, they can escalate the situation to our Shipping Specialists as well!
Ok thanks. And yes, we’ve reached out to an advisor who escalated the issue
to a specialist team. We’re hoping to get a positive resolution out of it.
But overall, we agree with the previous shop owners in that being able to
assign different packages to different shipping profiles would be very
helpful. Thanks again!
