Why is Shopify undercharging for shipping costs?

Shopify is not charging enough for shipping. I ship through Shopify and they calculated $9.69 when the shipping was nearly $13. I read other forums and everyone was complaining they had the same exact problem, and that they sat on the phone with shopify for over an hour with no resolution. Has no one really fixed this? I prepaid shopify for my shop to discover this indescrepancy now with my second order. I cant just up and leave shopify right now and will have to wait to find another host now.

Please someone tell me theyve found a solution?

Every time I reach out to shopify support its a 1 hour ordeal at best. I dont have the time to sit on the phone with a rep who wont fix it like everyone else before me with this issue. I am hoping and praying someone somewhere might have figured this out.

Hi, @HSHWholesale

Thanks for bringing your issue to the Forums. I can definitely appreciate the frustration.

Can you provide me with a bit more context on the incorrect charge? Were you charged a shipping label adjustment? If so, there should be an order listed that corresponds to the adjustment that will provide more information.

Additionally, I do want to clarify that the rates are provided via the carrier, not Shopify. I can understand how it appears to be coming from Shopify though! The carrier and Shopify are connected via API allowing the carrier to calculate the rate and send it through to your Shopify Admin.

Rate discrepancies can occur when the order dimensions are slightly larger than listed, or the weight of the package is slightly more. As mentioned, however, the discrepancy will be listed in your order that received the adjustment.

This could be due to DIM (Dimensional weight) that’s the actual dimension of the product. For example, my product is 1 Ibs (Shipping $9) but the space it occupies in the carrier’s carriage is deemed 3 Ibs and thus the cost of shipping is based on 3 Ibs( $13) which is based on the LWH.

The Issue here is Shopify doesn’t currently support Dimensions in the Product listing, @Skye_1 is there any timeline for adding dimensions to the product listing page?

I know my team is working on a new feature that will allow for product dimension by SKU in our Live shipping cost calculator, APP. It should be ready in a few weeks, I Know there must be other Apps out there but may be paid.

I will also recommend you check out our website to print Pre-negotiated shipping labels and rates from Canada Post, USPS, UPS, CanPar, Purolator, and much more. We negotiated the best rates for you – up to 76% off.

Hi @Skye_1 ,

We had a similar issue today in our store, so I’m replying in chain in case anything has changed over the last year. Our products are fairly expensive, so we do add insurance for the full value of the item, and have our shipping profiles set up accordingly to add a few dollars extra to cover this. (customers are aware; in our policy) The order in question, 3102, was calculated from USPS Priority Mail to $22.26 and our cost for the label was $25.72 with the insurance coverage. It’s not a world-ender, but that $3.50 on each order would add up fast. We usually are within a variation of $0.50, so we were hoping to identify where the discrepancy is so we can make adjustments. This customer’s address is in a rural USPS zone, but he has placed orders with us in the past and the calculated shipping covered our cost with insurance by about $0.35. The product has a dimensional weight of 13 lbs, actual weight is 7 lbs, but that has also been accounted for in our shipping profiles. Mostly reaching out to see if you have any recommendations. We appreciate any assistance you can provide. Thanks!
