Wrong Root URL

Hi there

I am somewhat new to shopify and this may be a rookie question, but i cant seem to get my head around it.

I am having issues with the URL’s.

When entering the shopify site, the user is automatically redirected to /shop/frontpage.html resulting in a 404

The homepage is found in /pages/homepage.html

I am not allowed to edit anything in the URL before /pages/.

So i have an itch to change the root_url route, but from what i can understand, that is not supported.

I cant seem to find a place to designate /pages/homepage.html to be the index

Nor can i create a page at the location of /shop/frontpage.html

There is an index.json file present, and i have tried reinstalling the theme.

This error is also present when using Dawn theme, so it seems to be related to Shopify, rather than the theme.

I feel like this shouldnt be so complicated, as most other options seem somewhat intuitive in Shopify. But the solution eludes me.

What am i missing?

Thank you in advance

@Fresom please share the URL to inspect the code.

hi QmSources

Thank you for your response.

In regard to step 4 of your solution: What is your advised course of action, if the built-in settings to designate homepage is not present?

I tried on a couple different themes and the option you describe is not available.

Oddly the homepage does show correctly in the built-in-preview when you customize, but not when you launch the preview function(with the eye-icon) or access the site.

Thank you for any additional assistance you can provide

Hi ProtoMan

Thank you for being willing to assist. The site is behind a password at the moment, since i do not wanna publish it with this error.

I am not able to send you a private message, to share the password, as your forum doesnt seem to support this.

The URL is the following:

https://graviditetsshoppen.dk/shop/frontpage.html

I dunno if you can bypass the password screen with your almighty Shopify powers :slightly_smiling_face:

Otherwise please advise, as to how i can properly share access to you.

@Fresom so how can I access to your store front

That was my question!

Do you suggest i share the password in public, to a non-working website. Not only does it hurt the company brand, but customers get easily confused.

How do you usually do support in these kind of situations? I would expect you have some sort of procedure for this.

The collaboration code is 3957 - if you can use that.

Hey, @Fresom ! That does look strange. It looks like we’ll need to access your account in order to resolve this issue.

Hi Dirk

Thank you for your assistance.

The issue is sovled. I suspect the error was caused either by browser cache or serverside cache, or a combination of these.

But overall a very strange behavior.

After moving the domain from another shop system to Shopify, the browser kept creating abominations of URL adresses. A mix of Shopify URLs and the old shops URLs.

E.g:

/shop/frontpage.html is not a valid shopify URL.

This URL occured when clicking the logo and/or using the navigation. Rest of the site worked as intended. This behavior persisted for a long time (weeks).

To the best of my knowledge, there isnt a Shopify function to force a certain page to be the frontpage - so when Shopify thinks the above example is the correct URL - you are out of luck! (Some themes may have a function to enforce a starting page, but that is far from all themes, as i tested quite a few of them.)

I had a Shopify partner look it over and realised he wasnt seeing the same error. He made a redirect from the faulty URL to the correct URL and apparantly that was enough to reset the cache and the issue resolved.

Again, i thank you all for your interest and assistance.

And children, dont forget to flush your cache!
