A merchant needs to prevent customers from using Shopify’s “Buy again”/repurchase button because reordering past orders does not preserve required line item properties tied to a custom data-collection form. This creates a risk that certain products are purchased without mandatory submitted information.
A Shopify team response says there is a beta flag that can disable the “Buy again” button, but merchants must contact Shopify Support to request it be enabled.
A later reply provides a no-code path in Shopify admin: go to Settings > Checkout, customize the relevant configuration, open the settings panel, and switch off the “Buy Again button” toggle. It also notes that hiding the button may reduce reorder revenue, so replacing it with a custom flow could be preferable.
The issue appears to have a practical workaround, though the best long-term solution remains open if the merchant wants to preserve reorder functionality while collecting required data.
I have the following issue.
Due to some constraints of the products we sell, we need to collect some data from customers before making a purchase for certain items. This is done via a custom form, but the id of the submit is added as a line item property.
When a customer accesses their order index page, they can reorder a past order, but this loses the attached line item properties.
The easiest way to fix it for now, would be to disable the option to reorder a past order. Is that possible?
I have read the docs for hours, but not found anything useful so far.
Hi - I’ve chatted to the team about this and there is a beta flag that we can enable on behalf of merchants to disable the “Buy again” button - if this would help, you can reach out to support and request that this flag be enabled.
Here’s a 4-step process to hide default buy again button without any code.
How to Hide the Buy Again Button on Shopify
The setting lives inside the checkout and customer accounts editor. Here’s where to find it:
Step 1: From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Checkout.
Step 2: In the Configurations section, click ‘Customize’ next to the profile you want to edit.
Step 3: In the editor, click the Settings icon (gear icon in the top-left or sidebar panel).
Step 4: In the Settings panel, scroll down and find the Buy Again button toggle and switch it off.
That’s it. The buy again button will no longer appear on the order history and order status pages.
Should You Hide It or Replace It?
Hiding the button removes the problem that merchants are facing, but it also removes the opportunity of reordering revenue. If you don’t want to lose reorder revenue, then consider replacing the default button with a better experience.
