Hello @JxDASH
You’re absolutely not alone in this, and you’re right to be cautious — what you’re experiencing is unfortunately super common after connecting a new domain and email, especially on Shopify. Here’s a breakdown of what’s going on and what you can do about it:
What’s happening?
When you buy a domain and link it to your Shopify store:
. Your domain registration (WHOIS data) may be public unless you enabled WHOIS privacy protection, which means bots can find your email easily.
. Shopify stores are often scanned by bots once they go live (even if not launched yet), especially if you use popular themes or plugins.
. Some bots send “customer” messages or fake Shopify support emails to phish for credentials or scam you.
How to STOP or MINIMIZE the spam
- Use WHOIS Privacy Protection
. If you bought your domain from Shopify, GoDaddy, Google Domains, etc., check your domain settings and enable WHOIS Privacy (sometimes called “Domain Privacy” or “Private Registration”).
. This hides your personal contact info from public databases.
- Set up Spam Filters (Gmail example)
Since you’re using Gmail:
. Open Gmail → click the
Settings gear → See all settings → go to Filters and Blocked Addresses.
. Create a filter like:
. From contains: suspicious domains or key phrases like “Shopify”, “store open for sale?”, “do you ship to…”
. Subject includes: “Re: Unlock more revenue”, “Hello”, etc.
. Action: Skip the inbox, Mark as spam, or Delete it.
You can also create a filter that flags emails not sent to a valid customer service alias (like support@yourdomain.com).
-
Use a Contact Form Instead of Displaying Your Email
. If you’re displaying your email on your website, replace it with a contact form that uses CAPTCHA (like reCAPTCHA v2 or hCaptcha) to block bots.
-
Don’t Use Your Main Email for Domain/Store
. Create a separate email just for domain registration (like admin@yourdomain.com), and keep your support/customer email private.
. Use a service like Zoho Mail or Google Workspace with aliases, so you can change public-facing emails easily without affecting your real inbox.
- Report Phishing/Spam
. If any email looks like it’s impersonating Shopify or another service, report it to:
. Shopify: phishing@shopify.com
. Gmail: Click the three dots → “Report phishing”
Pro Tip:
Install a Shopify app like Shop Protector or Hush – No Bots. These apps block bots from submitting forms and help cut down spam leads.
Thsnk you
