$450 to update my theme due to custom code?

Hello, we have our paid website theme where over the past 6 months I have had custom code added through one of the “shopify experts” - changing font sizes, adding new sections, dimension changes etc

I’ve gone back to them about updating the theme to the latest version (it’s been 12 months since being updated) and they have quoted me $450 USD. I tried to update the theme myself and added the custom codes but it just looks terrible and did not work correctly.

Is this price normal for when you have custom code made for the theme you use?

Are we now basically in a trap where it’s going to cost hundreds of dollars each time we want to update our theme?

Man that’s a lot of money. You would be better off hiring someone from the freelance platforms.

That could be reasonable depending on how many custom codes you have. The price range is usually $25 to $1000. Just think of it on how many days did someone took when adding the code. You could possibly find someone that is cheaper but work might reflect with the price. I would shop around. Did you use the Shopify free theme? If so, please provide your website, I can possibly tell how much to update
