I’ve struck a hurdle. I’ve reached the product variant I think. Is what I’m trying to do possible? I want to show a photographic print that has the variants of framed, unframed, the colour of the frame and 4 different sizes

Yes, you have reached Shopify limitations for options (only a maximum of 3, unfortunately). There is a workaround though, you can separate the colors into multiple products, but the options will be the same for each, like:
| Product (Frame Colour) | Product Options |
|---|---|
| Dancing Pilea (Black Frame) | Unframed, Frame Size, Sizes |
| Dancing Pilea (White Frame) | Unframed, Frame Size, Sizes |
| Dancing Pilea (Natural Frame) | Unframed, Frame Size, Sizes |
| Dancing Pilea (Walnut Frame) | Unframed, Frame Size, Sizes |
