I would like to give customers the ability to add text and choose fonts for the item that they would like to purchase. How can this be done?

First of all tell me what are you selling online? Its a custom printed T-shirt or else.
We can create extra meta field for customers to select size of font and add extra text by doing customization of product page ie product template liquid file, May be it will take time.
