Since November 8 to November 9 2023, my Analytics has been broken. I’ve not been able to receive any help from Shopify support and I’m at loss of what would be my next step in figuring out the cause and solution:
The actual store sessions or conversions never dropped. Here’s an example from just a few days ago, where conversions are 0 even though there obviously were sales:
I would think that its an issue with GDPR, some other stores reported similar issues. Shopify tracks only gdpr consented sessions, so a correct implementation is important.
I have the exact same problem although its been about 2 weeks for me. And am still working with shopify support. What you say makes sense because I have been changing around apps and GDPR must have been one of them. It would have been nice to hear this or have this more easily communicated by support if this is indeed the problem.
Do you happen to know of any guide or step by step to troubleshoot where the problem might be located?
I have tried no cookiebanner at all. Tried the shopify integrated one, and tried a 3d party app. But none of these options seems to be working correctly.
Visits are not shown correctly and conversion rate is completely off e.g. 5 visits (should be much higer) with 3 order and a conversion rate of 0%.
I also think it’s an issue with GDPR, as I didn’t have a cookie banner. I activated Shopify’s default cookie banner. Now it seems like it may only record analytics well for the people who consented with the cookies. This still makes the data and analytics unusable.
Is this normal? Aren’t analytics supposed to be correct either way?
Hi, unfortunately yes, its normal behaviour. At least thats how Shopify implemented it for its Pixel on which most of the trackers rely. There is some debate what and what not can be tracked without user consent, you can find it on the net, but here you can read about the Shopify implementation: https://shopify.dev/docs/apps/build/marketing-analytics/pixels
Basically this is the important part:
"Web pixel app extensions are compatible with the Customer Privacy API in that they honor the consent signals chosen by the customer. You can’t call the Customer Privacy API from a web pixel app extension.
In regions where customers must consent to tracking, app extension callbacks are executed only after consent is given. All previously-registered events are then replayed, to capture any events that already occurred on the page.
In regions where tracking is enabled by default and customers can opt out, the callbacks are executed as events are registered until the user opts out."
The issue you’re experiencing seems to be closely related to the implementation of GDPR and cookie consent management. When customers don’t provide consent for tracking, Shopify’s analytics and pixel integrations won’t capture sessions or conversions accurately, which is why you’re seeing discrepancies in your data.
Our app, Pandectes GDPR Compliance, is fully integrated with Shopify’s Customer Privacy API, and we’ve seen it help merchants resolve these kinds of issues. The app ensures that customer consent is managed correctly, so your analytics can function properly within GDPR-regulated regions like the EU.
Additionally, to improve accuracy in analytics tracking, the app also supports dynamic consent and offers detailed reports on how visitors interact with your site, even under strict privacy regulations.
I’d recommend ensuring your cookie consent setup is correct, especially with regards to how it interacts with Shopify’s privacy and pixel setup.
Feel free to reach out if you’d like any assistance or need help configuring the app!
