App for sub categories off main category

Hi! Is there an app to add sub catagories to a main category and to increase the number of categories you can have?

Hi @greenerpastures ,

Are you primarily wanting to display this sub-categories from your main menu so customers can more easily navigate your products? If so, you can achieve this by utilizing [drop-down menus](https://bit.ly/3oQKiK1\).

Shopify doesn’t have sub-collections or sub-categories, but you can make it look this way by using drop-down menus. For example, a clothing store may have both men’s and women’s sections, and want to offer a shoes section for both men and women. They could create a collection for each one and then have them drop-down from the “Men” and “Women” menu links that they have in their main menu, giving the appearance of sub-collections.

Shopify allows merchants to use a large number of collections on their stores so you should not be limited by this. If you’re wanting to create sub-collections for another reason, please let me know.

Thanks for the info, new to Shopify, coming from 20 years of Magento sites. I do alot of print ot order sites for School Districts. What I would like is a Collection named Utica School District, then that sub collections for each school in the district. Was easy in magento, just trying to find an easy way in Shopify.

Thanks

Hi @greenerpastures ,

Okay, fantastic. Can you tell me a bit more about the products that you intend to sell?

You can create a collection called “Utica School District” that contains all products from various schools, and have this as the main link in your menu. You can then create a collection for each school within the district and add them as drop-down items from the main menu, which will make it easier for customers to find and browse the products for the school they’re interested in.

I can show you how this works by testing this in my own test store. In Online Store > Navigation, I’m able to edit my main menu and add the Utica School District collection here. I can then add the collections I’ve created for each school underneath as drop-down items:

When I save these changes and view the online store, you can see how the drop-down menu works:

I hope this explains things but please let me know if you have any further questions.

Great that is exactly what I need! We sell t shirts to the schools.

Thanks for being so helpful!

Hi @greenerpastures ,

I’m glad this helped! I wish you the best of luck with your store and please feel free to get in touch again if you have further questions.

Hi Victor,

I hope you are doing well,

I am experiencing some difficulties with that.

I have created my new collection (linked the product too), and added as drop-down item from the main menu to the existing collection that I have already created BUT when I “save menu” I cannot see this new collection updated and displayed in my landing page - main menu

I do not know how to solve it,

Can you help me, please?

Thanks

Hi @plopez ,

Thanks for reaching out with your question. Would you be happy sharing your store’s URL with me here so I can take a look? What collection have you added that doesn’t appear?

It’s hard to tell without being able to view your admin, but one thing you can check is if the menu you have edited in Online Store > Navigation is the same menu you have selected within your theme. This might be the cause of the issue if changes you’re making in your navigation settings are not being reflected on your storefront.

You can check this by accessing your theme editor and checking the Header section, where you’ll be able to see which menu is being used on the website:

Please check this and let me know if you’re still having issues.

Hi Victor,

Do you think that we can have a quick chat, so I can share my screen and show what I am doing?

Thanks

Hi @plopez ,

If you’d like to discuss this in more detail, you can contact our support team directly. They will be able to authenticate you on the store and access your theme editor to help you with this.

I am happy to continue helping you here but I won’t be able to view your store directly.

Hi Victor,

It’s me again!

Can you provide me with a customer support email, please? To contact them directly?

Thanks

Hi @plopez ,

There isn’t a direct email address you can use, but you can access our support options via the link I shared in my last post.

Once you’ve logged in and entered your topic or question into the search bar, you’ll be presented with a list of related articles. Below that list you should see a button to get support from our team. After clicking here, you’ll be able to contact us through your preferred method (including email and live chat).
