I’m considering a page layout app, but I was taken aback by the information it would access, including “personally identifiable information about your customers, including names, email addresses, phone numbers, physical addresses, geolocations, IP addresses, and browser user agents.”
For that matter, we also use a review app, which probably accesses similar info. And then there’s Tiktok.
I’m concerned about the privacy implications of these apps, and I wonder if they might be exceeding our privacy policy.
I’d love to know your thoughts? Is there a legitimate cause for concern here? Do I need to avoid these apps? Modify our privacy policy?
Actually, the apps that you use have their own set of privacy policies which you can check with them, and if you don’t want to have any issues with those apps collecting information add the privacy rules of those apps at the bottom of your privacy policy page. This way you won’t be in any kind of trouble.
Great question. As @SivaGautham mentioned each app has their own privacy policies which you can check with them directly if you wanted to know any specifics, but something to note is that all apps and themes which are sold in the Shopify App and theme store are vetted and approved by Shopify. It wouldn’t be necessary to adjust your privacy policy unless the app explicitly states it.
My advice would be to reach out to the developers of the page layout app directly to find out more about their privacy policies but there’s nothing to worry about in general as this is normal and not a cause for concern.
I’ve already looked at the privacy policies of the apps in question, but I found them ambiguous. In two cases , I reached out directly to their support teams. One replied in a way that wasn’t very enlightening. The other has not replied yet.
It’s reassuring to hear that Shopify vets apps offered in its app store. I hadn’t thought of that.
I’m inclined to go ahead with these apps and make some modest updates to our own policy.
