BOGO is a good way to increase your AOV, clear inventory, attract new customers!

Journal of Business Research: "People prefer BOGO over discounts because they’re easier to grasp. Instead of doing the mental math to calculate savings from discounts, customers instantly see a clear benefit: “I get more for the same price.”

However, there are a few pitfalls to avoid when using BOGO that can impact your sales:

1. Wrong product strategy

  • BOGO works best for products people use repeatedly or in multiples:

:check_mark: “buy 1 lipstick, get 1 liptick,” (women usually have more than one liptick),
:cross_mark: “buy 1 desk, get 1 desk” (customer’s don’t need 2 desks at the same time)

  • Buy X, Get Y: stores offer something random rather than a complementary item. If they buy a laptop, store should give them a mouse, something that adds value to their purchase, not a helmet or something else.

2. Free or Percent off?

Our BFCM 2023 data shows merchants preferred offering free items over discounts, especially BOGO FREE.

For percent off, the top choices were 50%, 20%, and 10%. If you’re new, 20% is a safe starting point! But remember to include products with at least a 50% profit margin to ensure store profitability.

3. How often do you think you should do a BOGO?

Offering BOGO can work effectively even year-round if done right:

  • Year-Round: Consider Buy X, Get Y instead by offering exclusive, small gifts (Y) that are valuable to customers. If you have small budget, you can narrow down the offer for first-time buyers → this way, the offer even raise your brand’s image and value perception.

  • Big BOGO: Reserve larger BOGO offers for holidays, seasonal events, or special occasions to keep the offer special and prevent devaluing your products.

  • Fresh Promotions: Mix up your BOGO with other promotions to keep things fresh with customers—try gifts, discounts, bundles, upsells to avoid customer fatigue.
