Bulk Account Invite

Topic summary

Bulk-inviting ~9,000 imported customers to set passwords after migrating to Shopify. A CSV-based approach failed because extra column headers aren’t allowed, and a bulk “Send email” option wasn’t visible after selecting customers.

Key points:

  • Built-in bulk account invites are only available on Shopify Plus (enterprise plan). Non‑Plus stores won’t see a bulk invite/send option.
  • Alternatives suggested: third‑party apps like WOTIO Account Invite Plus and UpSolite: Bulk Invite & Login (bulk one‑click activation; free tier up to 5,000 customers with minimal charges beyond).
  • Free workaround: a two‑email process from a linked guide; note Shopify appears to rate‑limit invite emails to 5 per 10 minutes, so avoid importing all ~10k at once.
  • Best practice: customize invite emails to look authentic and reduce spam complaints, which can affect deliverability.

Status: No confirmed resolution from the original poster; decision on approach remains open.

Hi All

I am in the process of migrating to shopify and I have about 9000+ customers on my old site, I know how to import them but is there a way of sending a bulk e mail out to them all asking for them to set a password on their account on the new shopify site.

I know this can be done one by one but it would take me forever.

I have been shown one way by adding a new column to the CSV file before I import with code in it to then send a bulk e mail but I can’t get an extra columnn on the CSV file as it don’t allow new column headers.

Any ideas would help me greatly

thanks in advance

hello there!

  1. Export your customer list from your old site. Depending on the platform, this may be done via a CSV file or another format that can be imported to Shopify.

  2. Import your customer list to Shopify by going to “Customers” > “Import customers” in your Shopify admin panel. Make sure to map the relevant fields, such as first name, last name, and email address.

  3. Once the import is complete, go to “Customers” in your Shopify admin panel and select all the imported customers.

  4. Click on the “Send email” button and create a new email inviting your customers to create an account on your new Shopify site. You can use Shopify’s built-in email template editor or use a third-party email service to create the email.

  5. Make sure to include a link to your new site and clear instructions on how to create an account and set a password.

  6. Preview and test the email before sending it to your customers.

  7. Once you’re satisfied with the email, send it to all the selected customers.

Hi

there is no send “e mail” button that appears after I select all the customers.

Where should this be - im using Shopify 2.0 if that helps.

thanks

Hi Gazza123,

I recently migrated an online store from WooCommerce to Shopify as well.

Shopify built-in Bulk account invite function is only available to Shopify Plus. Therefore you will need to look for third-party app to do so.

I used WOTIO Account Invite Plus to do so and it works fine.

One thing though, better to customise your account invite email so it looks authentic/professional before you bulk send to your existing customers. Otherwise your customer might mark your email as spam, then it might affect your email deliverables in the future.

Good luck!

Here we wrote a solution without paid apps.

It requires the customer to click 2 consecutive emails

Yet Shopify seems to limit the invitations emails to 5 per 10 minutes, so we’d recommend you not importing all 10k customers at once

Hi there!

Full transparency — this is our app. If you’re looking to send bulk account-activation emails to all 9,000+ imported customers, you can do this easily with the UpSolite: Bulk Invite & Login app.

It lets you send one-click account activation/invite emails in bulk, so you don’t need to manually trigger them one by one.

There’s also a free tier for up to 5,000 customers, with minimal usage charges beyond that, so it works well for larger migrations like yours.

You can check it out here: https://apps.shopify.com/upsolite-bulk-invite-and-login

Hope this helps, and best of luck with your migration!
