I have a website at present with loads of customers but i’m migrating over to Shopify - I want to be able to import all the customers with their passwords from my old site as I don’t want to annoy customers having to all reset password once I go live.
I have downloaded the CSV file that Shopify supplies with all the info needed but it has no option for passwords.
also it only has one phone number column - does this have the option to add a second number so I can add a landline and a mobile.
Unfortunately, Shopify does not allow the import of customer passwords due to security reasons. When a customer signs up on Shopify, their password is hashed and salted for security purposes, and it is not possible to import passwords that have been encrypted with a different algorithm or salt.
One option to consider is to include a message to your customers informing them that they will need to reset their passwords on your new Shopify store. You can also make this process as easy as possible by providing clear instructions and links to the password reset page.
As for the phone numbers, Shopify only allows for one phone number field by default. However, you can create a new customer attribute for a second phone number using the Shopify API or an app like the Advanced Customer Fields app. This will allow you to store additional information about your customers that is not provided by default.
I appreciate that you’re wanting the transition to be as seamless as possible for your customers.
To clarify, the CSV file allows you to import a list of customers. However, as @mics mentioned, passwords are not imported because these are encrypted outside of Shopify.
I recommend letting customers know (perhaps via email or social media) as far in advance as possible that you’re making some changes to the online store, and then send them an invitation to register the account once you’ve made the switch. I’ve received communications like this from stores I’ve purchased from, and it has been fairly simple to set up a new account when they email me an invitation.
I hope the migration is going smoothly for you! Let me know if there’s anything else you need help with.
Hi - I have sucsessfully imported my customers - how would I now go about emailing them to ask them to redo their passwords - can this be done in bulk of do I need to do it individually.
What would be the best e mail template to use and so on.
Yes, I understand what you need. Here are the steps you can follow to email your customers and ask them to reset their passwords in bulk:
From your Shopify admin, click on “Customers” and then click on the “Export” button to export a list of all your customers’ email addresses to a CSV file.
Open the CSV file in a spreadsheet program like Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets.
Create a new column called “Password Reset Link” and populate it with a formula that generates a unique password reset link for each customer. Here’s an example formula you can use in Google Sheets:
Replace “yourstorename” with your actual Shopify store name, and replace A2 with the cell containing the customer’s email address. This formula generates a unique password reset link for each customer that expires after 24 hours. 4. Save the modified CSV file.
From your Shopify admin, click on “Customers” and then click on “Import” to import the modified CSV file back into Shopify.
When prompted, choose to update existing customers with the new information.
Once the import is complete, go to “Customers” and click on “More filters” to filter the list by “Password reset link” and select “is not empty”.
Select all the filtered customers and click on “Email customers” to send them a password reset email.
For the email template, you can use the default “Password Reset Instructions” email template in Shopify. Here’s an example of what you can write in the email body:
Email:
Dear valued customer,
We recently upgraded our system to enhance your shopping experience.
As part of this upgrade, we need you to reset your password to access your account. Please follow the link below to reset your password. This link will expire in 24 hours, so please reset your password as soon as possible. [password reset link]

The error message you are seeing is stating that the column name you are trying to use is not accepted by Shopify. This can happen if the column name includes characters that are not allowed by Shopify, or if the column name is already being used by Shopify for another purpose.
To fix this issue, you can try changing the column name to something that is allowed by Shopify. Here are some tips for creating column names in Shopify:
Use only letters, numbers, and underscores in column names.
Don’t use spaces or special characters.
Keep column names short and descriptive.
If you have already tried changing the column name and are still experiencing issues, you may want to reach out to Shopify support for further assistance. They can help you identify the specific issue and provide guidance on how to resolve it.
Within the Shopify admin, customer account invites are sent individually. The CSV customization is outside of Shopify Support’s scope. If it isn’t working for you, I recommend checking out an app for sending customer account invites in bulk, such as Bulk Account Invites Send.
