Can I undo an accidental refund for the wrong item?

Topic summary

Accidental refund processed on the wrong item; requester asks if it can be undone.

  • Shopify support confirms a completed refund cannot be canceled or undone.
  • If the issue is the wrong item but the refund amount is still short, you can issue an additional partial refund for the difference without selecting a product line item.
  • You should then correct inventory by manually adjusting stock levels for the item that was mistakenly refunded.
  • If the customer was refunded too much (amount too high), Shopify cannot reclaim those funds; you must arrange a separate transaction with the customer to charge the difference.

Outcome: No native “undo” function. Remediation involves partial refunds and inventory adjustments, or a new charge to recover over-refunded amounts.

Status: Resolved policy-wise; follow-up actions depend on refund amount discrepancy.

I accidentally refunded someone the wrong item. Is there a way to undo this?

Hi, @Mystery1

Thanks for posting and welcome to the forums.

Unfortunately, there is no way to cancel a refund once it has been completed. That being said, as you mention you refunded the wrong item and not the wrong price, are you able to adjust the refund amount and product inventory?

For example, if you owe the customer more money, you can simply refund that difference within the order, without selecting a specific product. Then, you can adjust the inventory for the wrongly refunded product in your admin.

However, if the refund amount was too high, there is no way to recover those funds without processing a separate transaction with the customer.
