Can I use Indian ID for US-based Shopify Payments and Stripe?

Hi,

I’m from India and Planning incorporate a LLC in Wyoming,USA while staying in india for fragrances business.

My supplier is from Canada who will ship all products directly to my customers for his warehouse in Toronto. my concerns are for payment gateway such as Shopify Payments and Stripe.

  1. I have read on shopify payments that they may ask documents such as Passport or Driving License for my personal identification in this case since my business is incorporated in USA and i don’t have such documents issued by the US govt. Can i provide them documents issued by indian govt. and they don’t suspend my shopify payments gateway account or is there any other so i can avoide suspension.

  2. Also, as i stated earlier my supplier is located in Canada and all orders going to fullfilled from Toronto directly to my customers is this acceptable by payment gateways ?

While we can only comment on the requirements of Shopify Payments here, which type of documentation can be accepted will vary so will depend on the individual outcome of your application.

I can share some of the documentary requirements in place here, to give you an idea of the process:

  • Government-issued photo ID (driver’s licence, passport, etc. - non-US ID may be accepted)

  • A Tax ID in the United States:

  • EIN if the merchant is LLC/Corp

  • SSN if merchant is Sole Proprietor

  • Business registration document (Registered in the US with the government)

  • Proof that the business is actually operating from the US. This can include tracking showing they are shipping from the US or proof of a physical US address (not a forwarding address), or more, at Shopify’s discretion. (Please note that a bank statement is not a valid proof of address).

  • A USD checking account, opened with a real US banking institution, located on US soil. Virtual banks and currency services will not work for this, it has to be a real US bank

I know from experience that the more of these you can provide the better, but the proof of address is the most important requirement without which the application will likely be declined.
