I am a teenager currently living in Hong Kong. I tried to use stripe as a payment processor (as it allows teenagers) but shopify doesn’t support it here. I was just wondering if I could use shopify payments with my parent’s legal information and using my own debit card for the payouts. If so, will it affect my parent’s income, jobs, or taxes in any way?
Hey, @jamez1 .
Thank you for posting this question!
You have to be over 18 years old or at least the age of majority in the jurisdiction that you reside in order to use Shopify, according to section 1.2 of the Shopify Terms of Service and section D.6 of the Shopify Payments Terms of Service (HK). Furthermore, due to varying regulations between countries and states, we also wouldn’t be able to confirm how this will impact your or your parents’ income or taxes and we’d recommend consulting your parents as well as the local authorities or legal advisors so you’d have the most accurate information to move forward with your business. We’d also recommend reviewing the Shopify Terms of Service and Acceptable Use Policy with an advisor.
Since Shopify Payments is available in Hong Kong, then Stripe wouldn’t be an option as Shopify Payments is powered by Stripe. However, if Shopify Payments is deemed unable to support your business, then Stripe may become an available option as a third-party payment gateway.
That being said, we’d love to hear more about your business idea and share some resources to help you get started. What types of products are you looking to sell? Would your parents be willing to manage the store and file the taxes as the store owners until you turn 18?
Hey Elias
Thank you for replying.
You said that Stripe will become an available option as a third party payment gateway if SP is deemed unable to support my business. Then how do I integrate stripe into my shopify store, I cannot find stripe as an option for third party payment processor? And if SP is powered by stripe, can’t I just link my stripe account to my SP? If so, how does that work?
Thanks in advance!
Hey, @jamez1 .
Thank you for following up!
Typically, after setting up the store and adding the products, merchants can activate Shopify Payments for Hong Kong SAR. Merchants are also recommended to review the requirements for using Shopify Payments as there are some bank account and personal information requirements. Once that’s done, our banking partners will review the information and determine whether a store is eligible to use Shopify Payments.
That being said, while Stripe doesn’t appear to be on our list of supported payment gateways in Hong Kong, we’d be happy to take a closer look your account and check with our Payments team. While we’re unable to provide account-specific support via the Shopify Community, we’d be happy to continue assisting you through live chat. Please visit the Shopify Help Center and login to your account to create a support request.
If you have any other questions on this topic, then don’t hesitate to let me know!
Hey Elias,
Thanks for replying. I already made a ticket with your payments team prior to this forum post. They told me that they could enable stripe for me but they have to review my account first. Is this true? And is it possible to get stripe in my situation?
Hey, @jamez1 .
Thanks again for the follow-up!
I can confirm that our Payments team will need to review your store in order to determine if you’re eligible to use Stripe. However, I wouldn’t be able to help determine your eligibility on the Shopify Community. I’d recommend getting in touch with our live support team via the Shopify Help Center and we can send a request to our Payments team. Since it can take several business days for your store to be reviewed, I’d suggest continuing to develop your store and adding your products while you wait to hear back from our Payments team.
Feel free to keep me posted!
Hi
Me and friends(age 15) wanted to start a Dropshipping business. We are based in South Africa and most of the payment providers require legal business names and all that.I heard about Stripe but them found out its not available in my country. Is there a way I can still integrate Stripe to my Shopify store. We’d really appreciate it if you could assist us there
Hi, @TrendShip .
Welcome to the thread.
You must be the older of 18 years, or at least the age of majority in the jurisdiction where you reside and from which you use the Services to open an Account, as indicated in section 1.1 of the Shopify Terms of Service. Are both of you 15? If so, then you may need to find someone older to be the store owner as well as in order to get a merchant account for a payment provider.
That being said, Stripe doesn’t offer their services in South Africa at this time so there wouldn’t be a way to integrate their services with a store operating in or from South Africa. However, if you need help finding a payment gateway in your region, then we’ve got a list of supported payment gateways in South Africa.
If you have any other questions on this topic, then don’t hesitate to let me know.
Hello,
I’m also a teenager from Hong Kong trying to do a dropshipping, my parents will be helping me untill I’m 18. I want to ask do you need a registered business to active the shopify payments? If so, that means I can’t activate Shopify payments, and what payment providers should I use?
Many Thanks.
Hi, @Edmon1 . You can find the requirements to use Shopify Payments in Hong Kong here. If you don’t meet the requirements listed there you can use a third party payment provider. This page can help you find third party payment providers available in your country.
