We are using the Shopify package - not the basic but the next level up. Does this enable us to sell in multiple currencies? Also if so, how does a customer see a currency in this version? Is it based on their API address - I saw mention of a currency drop down menu and there only being two currencies but I am not sure if I am confusing two things - so any advice would be much appreciated.
Merchants are able to sell in multiple currencies if they are using Shopify Payments as their primary gateway. Once this feature is enabled, you can choose whether you want currencies converted automatically or to an exchange rate of your choosing, and you can enable a currency selector on your store so customers can choose which currency they wish to browse your store in. Currencies will not change automatically, but you can use Shopify’s free Geolocation app which determines where the customer is based and recommends they switch to a currency based on their location. This app can also be used to recommend languages for customers if you have numerous ones enabled on your store.
This feature is not limited to those on the Shopify plan or above, however if you are on the Shopify plan ($79 USD p/m) you will be able to set price adjustments for different countries and regions. This would allow you to increase or decrease product prices based on a percentage for customers in different locations, along with allowing them to browse your store in the currency of their choosing.
I hope this has explained your options, but please do let me know if you’ve any further questions on this topic.
We are on the $79 plan - so please may I ask therefore on this plan and we set different currency rates how is it determined what a customer sees when they visit - eg if they are from Italy will it automatically display for them in Euros or do they get a choice of whether to pay in £ or Euros for instance?
The currency will not automatically change, no, but if you installed the aforementioned Geolocation app, they would be prompted to view the most appropriate currency for their location if you have it enabled. In your example, a customer in Italy would be prompted to view the store’s products with prices set in euros, but they’d still be able to view in pounds if they wished. If you have a currency selector added to your store, customers can toggle between currencies at their choosing.
Hi Victor, if I don’t have Shopify Payments available in my country but I do have Stripe, can I use that payment platform to offer check out in different currencies?
Shopify’s multi-currency feature is only available to merchants using Shopify Payments, so you would not be able to make use of this if you use Stripe or any other third-party gateway for payment processing. Whilst they do not work in exactly the same way, there are apps on the Shopify App Store that allow you to display your prices in multiple currencies, even if the customer will end up paying in your store’s default currency.
Hello, if I want to sell in two Currencies, My actual currency is pesos the store is Colombia, we use Mercado Pago, it is compatible if we install the app to sell in dolars ¡?
Thank you for getting in touch. The options available to you regarding accepting payments in multiple currencies will be determined by the payment gateway you are using to process payments with, and as such you would need to speak with Mercado Pago directly to learn more. I believe from looking at their documentation here that you would only be able to accept payments in a single currency, but you could try reaching out to them directly to confirm this.
