I have a customer who bought with her email incorrectly spelt. I changed her contact email on the order and it said this needs to be done under manage customer as well.
So I tried to edit the email in her customer record (she doesn’t have an account) and it says the email is already taken.
I even tried to change the email back in the order but this still did not work.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I’ll be happy to look into this for you and offer the best next steps.
In order to update a customer email address that was spelled incorrectly, you’ll first need to click into the specific order within your Shopify admin > Orders section. Then select Edit next to Contact Information and input the correct email address. You should see a pop up appear that prompts you to update the customers information within the customer profile. I’ll share a screenshot below from my test store for better visibility.
This yellow banner will appear if you have Update customer profile selected. Once you’ve navigated to the customer profile page and entered the correct email address it appears that you’re seeing the error message Email has already been taken however the customer does not have an account created. Could you please try double checking your Shopify admin > Customers section and searching the customer by: First name, last name or email address. The reason I suggest this is that a customer account may have been created and this error message is populating due to the email address being tied to an account.
You can still edit the email address for the customer on the order under Contact Information. When the pop up appears, please be sure to uncheck the box next to Update Customer Profile.
