That being said, we have an issue with the checkout. We asked some of the people who abandoned their carts and most of them said the checkout was too long. The current checkout that Shopify offers requires 7… 7!! clicks to actually reach the bank or payment gateway. Our competitors offer 3 and fewer clicks to their customers with another well-known platform. Can this be changed? if not we are moving to the platform. We have lost 380 checkouts in the last 30 days cause of this.

I’m afraid it is not possible to reduce the steps nor customise the Check out. You can only customise Shopify’s checkout pages if you’re a on Shopify plus plan.

You’re absolutely right that checkout should be as simple as possible to optimize conversions.
While @OpenThinking is correct that editing the checkout itself is only available on the Shopify Plus plan (as it is a premium feature) we would always recommend enabling dynamic and/or accelerated checkouts on your store. With dynamic checkout, customers skip the cart and complete their payment with the checkout method displayed on the button. The button dynamically changes to reflect the customer’s preferred accelerated checkout method.
Accelerated or express checkouts save customer payment and shipping information so that returning customers can more quickly complete payment for their orders. When a customer returns to a store that offers an accelerated checkout method, their information is automatically filled in at checkout.
Of course, you will want to check that there is nothing in your current store setup that might conflict with this feature - you can check that out here.
