Hello,
My client’s Shopify store is not accurately showing the number of sessions or visitors. See screenshot attached. When comparing the session/visitor data from Shopify with the user/session data from GA, there is a stark contrast. I tried updating from using a UA to a GA4 tag for Google Analytics property in the Google & Youtube app and the connection was successful.
However, if you navigate to Online Store > Preferences > Google Analytics, it’s still showing the UA tag. If I try updating it to a GA tag I get this error, “Analytics snippet does not look valid (UA-xxxx-x).”
Also, in the theme.liquid file, the Global site tag is still showing as the UA tag. Do I need to update that too?
Anyone know how to resolve this issue?
Thanks!
Hi @MoonRoosterLLC ,
This is Theodore from PageFly - Shopify Page Builder App.
Your client’s Shopify store has mismatched visitor data between Shopify analytics and Google Analytics (GA). Here’s how to fix it:
- Update GA Tracking: Make sure you’ve fully set up GA4 (not just updated from UA) and installed the GA4 tag correctly (might involve theme.liquid edit).
- Understand Discrepancy: Shopify and GA might have slight data variations due to different tracking methods. Focus on trends over time for comparison.
- Resolve Shopify Error: The error indicates you’re using a UA tag format. Delete the old UA connection and create a new one using the GA4 property ID.
- Update theme.liquid: Replace the old UA tag with the GA4 tracking code in the theme.liquid file.
