Would it be possible to integrate a community building tool into the shopify website?

For example, a customer comes onto the website and it says: “Your [social media] friends are also using [website]”

Does anyone know of a way to make this possible?

Basically, I am looking for a way to link the customers existing social media network to the shopify website, so they can see if any of their friends are also using the website and buying products.

You can do it probably with a custom app that reads Shopify customers through api and does the same for the social network you want to associate. Then for displaying the match on Shopify you can embed it with a iFrame.
