Create manual order using products set to draft!

Why can I not create a manual order using products that are set to draft? I have inventory in the warehouse (far away from me) and I need to get a sample shipped to myself. But draft products don’t show up in the product picker when manually creating an order. It’s pre-launch so I can’t set the product to active otherwise people will see it. So now, I have to contact my warehouse, and have them manually create the order.

I literally can’t think of a single reason to deny an admin the ability to create an order using a draft product.

Hi @mnearents

Thank you for your feedback on the draft product functionality. In this situation, the draft product is working as expected. Drafted products are hidden from the product list of active items to avoid any possible confusion or overlap of similar items. The draft function is a great tool for prepping products for a promotional or holiday sale or if you are slowly building out a catalogue of items.

In the situation you described, you do actually want the product to be “active”, meaning that it is eligible for sale, and you will want to remove all available sales channels. You noted you didn’t want the product to be live in the store, which is understandable. When you change the item to active status you will see the option to manage sales channel availability and can make it unavailable to all channels but still have it accessible for draft orders.

Hi @Shay Thanks for the reply and the info. I did finally remove all the sales channels. Some feedback from a customer perspective though:

Here are ways you can do it from a UI perspective and still avoid confusion:

  1. The product picker could easily have tabs for active/draft, or you could badge draft products really clearly in the list.

  2. Don’t show draft products in the picker, but if I enter an exact sku, then show me the product whether it’s active or draft. Clearly I know what I am doing if entering a sku (I tried this actually). You can say “Are you sure you want to create an order with a draft product?” to make sure I’m aware.

That being said, the workaround you described isn’t the worst thing in the world, ha.
