Desktop vs. Mobile Image Configuration

In most instances we are only able to upload/assign one image/video per block, which makes it challenging to define between device. Is there any upside (maybe not) in allowing the option for device specific images ie. horizontal vs. vertical aspect ratio. There may be a good reason why this isn’t integrated.

Hi @federalpioneer! Because of the wide range of device sizes out there (everything from very wide desktop screens to very narrow phone screens), Horizon is generally built to work with just one image, and then to use cropping alongside tools like focal point to help make sure images look their best no matter what screen size you’re looking at.

We’ve found that’s typically the easiest solution for most merchants to ensure their media looks great across devices, but I’m curious about your use case — do you have a specific situation where you’d really like this functionality?

Thanks for the question!

Hi @kjellr - appreciate your response. I can appreciate that, but at the same time, you can only have one focal point per image, not by device. The aspect ratio for desktop (horizontal/wide/landscape) is the inverse of mobile’s requirements (vertical/thin/portrait).

Sure, we could set a focal point, say bottom left, which is selected for its desktop configuration, but that same point may (or may not) work when literally flipping the aspect ratio. See below for a fishy use case with focal point:

Also, with the investment in product photography, intentionality, different screen sizes (to your point), etc. There shouldn’t be so much ambiguity around “will my image work everywhere” and more responsibility/empowerment, etc into the user’s hands.

Additionally, wouldn’t it also help with performance if mobile images were optimized down since we wouldn’t need to have a large format for desktop and smaller format for mobile? Especially when mobile is 75%+ of traffic?

Thanks for the time! Appreciate it.

Thanks for sharing more details here, and for the fishy example.

I can’t promise we’ll add this specific ability, but I will certainly take your notes into consideration as we continue thinking about how Horizon works across devices. Thanks again!
