DNS Settings

Topic summary

A user migrated their domain from Squarespace to Shopify and successfully added DNS records (Type A and CNAME) on Squarespace before deleting the domain there. The Shopify site is now displaying correctly, but the ‘Edit DNS’ button is missing in Shopify’s domain settings.

Current Issue:

  • Domain still shows as “managed by Squarespace, LLC” in Shopify
  • Unable to access DNS editing functionality in Shopify

Likely Cause:
The domain registration remains with Squarespace, meaning Shopify doesn’t have full DNS control yet.

Recommended Actions:

  • Wait 24-48 hours for DNS propagation to complete
  • Verify if nameservers were changed to Shopify’s (ns1.shopify.com and ns2.shopify.com) through Squarespace
  • Consider initiating a full domain transfer via Shopify’s “Transfer domain” option for complete control
  • Until transfer completes, DNS management will remain through Squarespace

Status: Unresolved; awaiting propagation or transfer completion.

Hi there, I am not able to find my DNS settings on Shopify. For context, I just switched my domain from Squarespace to Shopify. I added my Type A and Type CNAME settings on Squarespace and fully deleted the domain from Squarespace. Everything seems to be all good so far in terms of the website changing to the Shopify basic homepage, etc. but I am unable to find the ‘edit DNS’ button when going into my domains. I have checked various resources/guides but think the reason I can’t find it is maybe tied to the domains still saying ‘managed by Squarespace, LLC’. If I wait for a few hours will that change? I just want to confirm I didn’t do something wrong that doesn’t allow me to edit my DNS settings on Shopify. Thanks for any help!

Hi @joselyncinco

Maybe the reason you don’t see the “Edit DNS” button is because your domain is still registered with Squarespace, and therefore Shopify does not have full control of the DNS settings until the transfer is complete or if you modify the DNS records to point to Shopify. Since it is still looking like “managed by Squarespace, LLC,” allowing it a couple of hours (or 48 hours) could suffice as the propagation finishes, but you also have to double-check if you’ve properly transferred the domain registration to Shopify or the nameservers (say, to ns1.shopify.com and ns2.shopify.com) via Squarespace. If you have not yet initiated a full domain transfer, you’ll need to initiate it from Shopify’s Domains settings under “Transfer domain” in order to have full control otherwise, you’ll be managing DNS via Squarespace temporarily.
