Do I need a separate product page for each item type in my online store?

Hi Everyone,

Can someone point me in the right direction?

I’m in the process of setting up my online store. Do I need to create a product page for each product type, ie hoodies, sweatshirts, drinkware etc or is there one automatically/a template already set up for each?

I ask this because want to add a collapsable box to each product type for info, sizing, shipping etc. When I first started creating my site, I just kept adding different products under different collects eg, t-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts etc, but am now realising that when adding a collapsable box to a specific product page, each product now has that collapsable box.

Can I edit the template page for each product type to include a collapsable box to reflect the product’s info, sizing, shipping, etc?

Hopefully this makes sense!

Thanks

Hey Pkrhome, with Shopify 2.0 Themes you could create meta fields and connect them as dynamic resources to fields in the template so you could use the same template but the information would be different according to the product and the corresponding meta field.

Hi @Pkrhome

You can use metafield to put the dynamic content in the collapsible section.

Please refer to the below video to learn how you can enable metafields and assign them to a collapsible content box.

Hi, @Pkrhome . I’m happy to help you out with this! I just have a few questions to make sure I’m giving you helpful advice going forward.

  • Will all of your products have the same layout design?
  • Are there any product information fields (like sizing, shipping, etc.) that you’d like to include with some products, but not others?
  • Which theme are you currently using?

The product page templates that come with your theme will depend on the theme you’re using. Themes created by Shopify have one default product template that is automatically applied to all of your products by default. However, some third party themes may have additional product templates built in. All that being said, if you’re using an Online Store 2.0 theme and you need additional page templates, you can create new templates within your theme editor. You can learn more about theme templates in this guide.

If you’re using the same collapsible row fields for all of your products, and the layout of the page will be the same for all of your products, there is no need to create additional product page templates. However, if the layout of the page will differ among products, or if you need to include information on some products and you want that field removed from other products, that is when you would want to create additional product page tempates.

If you are using collapsible rows and you want each product to display unique product information within those collapsible rows, you can use metafieds to do this. Metafields allows you to save and display information that is not usually captured in the Shopify admin. You can learn more about metafields on this page. We also have a metafields tutorial here.

Please let me know if you have any questions!
