size of images is the most important thing to fix site speed

Site loading speed is important for 2 main reasons:

  1. A fast website improves the user experience, reduces the bounce rate, and several studies have shown that there is a correlation between load speed and conversions.
  2. Having a fast website can help to get a high rank in Google, since it is one of the many factors they use to determine a website’s position in search results

This said, overall Shopify offers a great infrastructure to host your e-commerce website, and most of the themes that you can find on Shopify Theme Store are well optimized, both the free and the premium.

Most of the time, speed is affected by:

  • The number of images you load on each page, and if the images are optimized for the space they use on the page
  • The number of 3rd party apps or scripts you are loading on your website

This free Google tool called PageSpeed Insights allows you to measure the speed of your website. I suggest you try measuring the main pages of the website to have a first preliminary idea of how fast your website is. Check:

  • Home Page
  • Collection Page
  • Product Page

And the result will you give some suggestions on how you can improve your website loading speed.

This is another free tool I use often that gives additional insights: https://www.webpagetest.org/
