Does Shopify offer SSL certificates? Need info

Topic summary

Shopify provides free TLS (also called SSL) certificates for all domains added to a store. Certificates are issued automatically for: assets on *.myshopify.com, domains bought or transferred to Shopify, and third‑party domains whose A and CNAME records point to Shopify.

Verification and visibility:

  • Check the Domains page in admin; status should be “Connected”.
  • A padlock icon appears in the browser address bar on the storefront.
  • Shopify does not provide certificate files for third‑party services, but public cert details can be viewed via command‑line tools (guide linked).

Timing and renewals:

  • Provisioning/propagation can take up to 48 hours after DNS is set correctly.
  • Certificates expire every 90 days; Shopify renews them automatically every 60 days.

User issues raised:

  • One user needs “www.” covered and reports login complaints; staff requested domain origin; unresolved.
  • Third‑party domain owners were advised to ensure correct DNS per Help Center and wait up to 48 hours; chat support available.
  • Some received external registrar expiry notices; guidance implies Shopify handles renewals if the domain is connected, but users should verify status.

Status: Guidance provided; individual cases remain open.

Does shopify provide SSL certificate? Can anyone give me some information about it?

Hey, @HB23 !

Thanks for reaching out, I’m happy to share more information about SSL certificates on Shopify.

TLS certificates (also known as SSL certificates) are provided for free for all domains that are added to Shopify. A TLS certificate is issued automatically in the following circumstances:

  • For any assets that are hosted on the .myshopify.com domain.
  • When you buy a custom domain through Shopify or transfer a domain to Shopify.
  • When you connect your third-party domain to Shopify by changing your A record and CNAME record to point to Shopify.

You can make sure that your TLS certificate has been issued by verifying that the status of the domain is Connected on the Domains page in your admin. In addition, the padlock icon is displayed beside your online store’s URL in the address bar when you view your storefront. You can check out this help document for more information!

If you’re looking for a copy of your Shopify SSL Certificate for your third party hosted services, this is not a service that we provide. However, if you’re looking for the public information associated with your certificate, I recommend checking out this third-party guide for the steps! It is important to note that SSL certificates expire after 90 days and Shopify renews certificates every 60 days.

Please let me know if you have any other questions!

I need to reissue the SSL so that it has the ‘www.’ in front. It seems to be missing and any customers complaining lately that htey can’t log into store.

Hey @ibookflipSV .

Thanks for reaching out.

Could you let us know if this domain was purchased from the Shopify platform? Or, did you happen to transfer a third-party domain to your Shopify store? Typically, the SSL certificate will be provided to the domain within 48 hours.

Looking forward to your response.

I’m having the same problem with my website, my domain was purchased via a third party. How do I resolve this?

Hi @Oneeightthree1

The SSL certificate is propagated once the DNS settings are input. This can take up to 48 hours to take effect though. Using the link that Ollie shared in his post will take you to our Help Center and you can find the appropriate DNS settings you will need for your domain. If you are still having issues with your domain don’t hesitate to connect with our chat support team for further help.

Hi Greta,

We got an email from Register.com that our SSL certificate will expire on 9/13/24, but according to what I just read in your post, I dont have to worry about it because our domain is connected to Shopify. www.spartasoftub.com. We have been with you since April I think.

I am trying to have everything through Shopify and not have to deal with Register anymore.

thanks

John

I received a message that my SSL had expired. From this response it looks like I do not need to worry about it. In my domains I do not see anything that references whether my SSL is valid.
