Drop down menu to shop by brand or colour etc

Hi, building my first shopify store using the Supply theme and wanted to know if there is a way to have a menu that allows you to shop by brand, size, colour, material etc within a collection.

Please see the attached mock up which I hope explains things a bit more clearly

Hi @craftywool

Thank you for your question.

To make a drop-down menu for your main menu you can follow the steps below:

  • From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Navigation.

  • Click the name of your main menu.

  • Choose one of the menu items to be the header for your drop-down menu, or add a new menu item to be the header( Yarn, Hooks, Accessories). If you don’t want the header to link to anything, then you can enter # in the Link field when you add the menu item.

  • Add first-level menu items to include in the new drop-down menu. Click Add menu item, enter the name of the menu item (Shop by Brand, Shop by Color, Shop By Material), and enter or select a destination for the link.

  • Click and drag the menu items and move them under and to the right of the header item.

  • The same with the second level drop-down menu, just simply add second-level menu items (Brand A, B, C…), click and drag them under and to the right of the first-level menu items

  • Click Save

I hope that this answer would be helpful.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. It’s not quite what I was trying to do. I wanted the drop down from yards to show all the options at the same time across the screen as shown in my mock up. I’m trying to avoid having to many sub menus flying out, just wanted all the options to be visible at once. I’ve attached a screen grab of a menu that shows what I’m trying to do

Hi @craftywool

I’m so sorry for this answer didn’t what you were looking for.

I just have an idea of doing it by adding the second-level drop-down menus. I’m attaching a picture below showing the result after doing this.

Does it look like what you want? If you consider following this method, please refer to this tutorial video, starting at minute 2:42.

If not, please overlook this message.

Hi,

Thanks, this looks like the effect I’m after. Would it allow for searching by a products colour or material? ie, if someone where searching for all blue wools or all wooden needles?

Hi @craftywool

Thank you for getting back to me.

Yes, it does. You can create whatever menu header such as product color or material, and also create the submenu items including all blue wools or all wooden needles products. But it’s a manual method so it’ll take time, by the way.

If you find the answer helpful, please help me mark it as a solution.

Hi,

thanks for the reply, sorry to keep on with the questions, but this is my first time using Shopify so it’s all new to me.

In order for someone to get to a listing of all the red wools (for instance) from the colour section of the menu would each red wool need to have a tag for the word red or would that be picked up from the item title?

Thanks

Hi @craftywool

Thank you for getting back to me.

Each red wool doesn’t need to include “red” in the title. The item title doesn’t matter and you can choose whatever item to be a submenu item. I recommend that you should create a collection of items in a certain size or color, such as a collection for all red wools that you mentioned above. And your customer could get the listing of all red wools by clicking the following submenu that links with the Red wools collection and it also helps you to avoid making too many submenus.

I am attaching the Collection information in case you want to learn more.

I hope this answer would be helpful.

Hi,

thanks for all you help with this.

So I have a product called Brand A, it’s a 2ply wool and is available in 3 colours. I’ve set it up as 1 product with 3 colour variants. I have collections for each Brand, Type and Colour

How do I add the product to each collection, i can only seem to be able to select 1 collection?, and how do I make the product variant show up if someone searches for all red products for example and the main product show up with all variants if they search for all brand A products or all 2ply products?

In my main menu I have:

A collection called Shop by Brands (to show all the products from each Brand) and collections for each brand as a sub menu.

A collection called Shop by Type for all the types of product with sub menus for all the types including 2ply (to show all 2ply products by all brands).

A collection called Shop by Colour with sub menus for all the colour variants for all the products.

Hi @craftywool

Thank you for keeping me in the loop.

You can add a product to one or more existing manual collections from the product’s details page. You can’t add product variants to a collection and also cannot make the product variant show up if someone searches for any product.

In my opinion, you should create a collection for Brand A, B, C inside the header Shop By Brand for example instead of making a collection for Shop by Brands.

Hi,

thanks once again. It’s a shame we won’t be able to show only red products for example. I think the way I’ve started to set up the site is as you have suggested with collections for each brand, so just now need to start adding all the products.
