Experiences with Shopify Payments withholding funds: Should I worry?

I have been looking into switching to the shopify platform, however I hear too many stories of Shopify Payments suddenly withholding a payout of funds and it sometimes being a nightmare to get this fixed. I do not plan on dropshipping, but run a digital educational membership site, as well as another site where I make and ship the items myself.

I’d like to hear of anyone else experiencing issues with Shopify Payments suddenly holding funds - which can really hurt a business, if not end it altogether. Am I worried too much about something that will likely never occur, or are my concerns justifed?

Thank you.

It’s not very common, and if it does happen it’s usually because they need additional information for verification purposes, and is resolved rather quickly when requested information is provided.

I do recommend you to read over Shopify Payment Terms of Service documents.

They just did it to me today with no email. I’m a new small business had five sales shipped all my items no issue I did have a large sell this weekend and it flagged as high risk however I contacted customer by phone and email support was no help some lame response about bank that it will take 24 to 72 hrs if you use Shopify they will own your business, last month customers couldn’t check out and it gave me issues with my Google merchant center. They have no right to hold my funds, I pay for service on this platform. I’m a small business owner, registered in my state and out of state and have my sellers license. I am not happy so no I wouldn’t switch. I’m looking for an alternative because I don’t understand whats going on right now.

They have withheld my funds, no notice, no email, no communication. This was after a verification check. Just an email saying ‘dear business owner we are withholding your payout for 120 days’. That was it. No way to contact them, no response from risk operations email. They just decided and that was that. No reason given. It’s been 3 weeks now. I would be very careful if i was you, i am currently considering changing platforms. No additional information has been requested, this is after 6 months trading with them. No refunds, no lost goods etc. So it’s bizarre, i agree with the other comments they now OWN your business, your say is irelevant and communication to you isn’t important to them
