Filter products by Profit Margin?

Is there a way - or app - to filter my products by profit margin? I mean the Profit Margin as calculated by Shopify based on Price and Cost, not data from real sales (as I don’t yet have any).

The reason is, I am about top start running my first ad campaigns and with ~800 products I want to first focus our ad spend on high-value products with the highest profit margins.

Hi there @MyCsPiTTa You should read this manual from the official Shopify site here https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/reports-and-analytics/shopify-reports/report-types/default-reports/profit-reports

Let me know if the steps there are elaborate enough for you.

Thank Emmanuel

I did actually already read that, but those reports only show data based your orders. For me, will no sales, it says “No data”.

I’m really more looking for enhanced product filters. Unfortunately, Margin is not even a column you can add in Bulk Editor (which is kind of dumb to me).

Hi @MyCsPiTTa ,

I don’t know of a native way to do this in Shopify. Like you said, it’s not a column that you can select in the builtin bulk-editor (maybe because it’s not a value you can edit directly). Aside from exporting your product data and calculating the margin in a spreadsheet, another options is our Ablestar Bulk Product Editor app.

When you open up the app there’s a ‘Product Margin’ filter that you can use to search for the products you want to edit (or export to a spreadsheet). Here’s super quick video showing how you can do that:

If that doesn’t work out for you please let me know and we’ll try and figure something else out. Best,

Daniel

Thanks Daniel.

The Ablestar App definitely looks useful! I might have to come back to it once we are up and running with sales. Right now, the app is a bit pricey just to solve this one task.

Thanks @MyCsPiTTa . If your store’s still under development (ie, it’s not on a paying Shopify plan) we do currently have a free plan that lets you make the edits without limits. If that doesn’t work for you (or anyone else reading this) feel free to direct-message me and work something out.

Best,
Daniel

Hi @MyCsPiTTa ,

I’m John the founder of Bloom Analytics. We have a feature called “Product Metrics”, where you can view sales, cost and gross margin for each product. We are also working on adding ad campaigns related to a product by early next week. Once you have selected the campaigns, you can easily view the contribution margin (gross profit - ad spend) for each product.

Check out Bloom with a Free Trial to see if it fits your needs.

Yeah Shopify calculates margin from Price minus Cost per item, which gives you a theoretical gross margin. Good starting point for pricing decisions.

The thing to keep in mind: that number changes once you start selling. Real margin includes transaction fees (2 to 3% per order), shipping costs (varies by destination), return rates (some products run 10%+ returns), and whatever you spend on ads to get that sale.

A product that looks like 55% margin on paper might end up at 15% net once you factor everything in. Worth doing the full math before committing to a supplier, not just price minus cost.
