Free download in exchange for name and email

Topic summary

Goal: Offer a direct file download in exchange for name and email without going through checkout, to avoid 0 USD orders that flood notifications while still capturing leads.

Key context: The free download is a lead magnet (free content used to collect emails). Current setup uses $0 products, creating noise in orders/notifications.

Suggestions:

  • Don’t use digital download/product apps for this, as they trigger orders; they’re ill‑suited for lead magnets.
  • Use an email service/automation to deliver the file after form signup (e.g., Klaviyo or Shopify Email). Klaviyo = email service provider with flows/automations.

Low‑cost path with Shopify’s native tools:

  • Collect emails via Shopify Forms (include required fields).
  • Use Shopify Flow or Shopify Email to auto-send a message with the download link immediately after signup, bypassing checkout and preventing 0 USD orders.

Debate: OP finds Klaviyo expensive and dislikes reliance on multiple apps; others note Shopify isn’t built primarily for digital products but can handle this use case affordably with built‑in tools.

Other notes: A suggested bulk product editor app appears unrelated to the need.

Status: No final implementation confirmed; recommended approach is forms + email/flow automation to deliver the download without checkout.

Is there a way of giving a direct download in exchange for name and email, without to go through the checkout? Currently they are listed as 0 usd product.

It annoys me too much that there is no way of filtering out the free ones, so the app notifications and the site notifications are flodded with useless 0 usd transactions and I dont see the big picture.

I am using the free downloads idea to drive traffic to the site, but I want to still gather the emails of everyone in the shopify to be able to reach them.

I didnt find any plugins and I dont have other smart ideas how to do it. If it needs to be programmed, Im willing to pay.

@warudokiruhya May this app help you.

It says its a product editor. How does it help?

If you’re collecting emails, you will be best using klaviyo or another email provider to collect these and then add a flow to give them the download.

@warudokiruhya I run a digital products app on Shopify. Definitely agree with @KieranDibor that you should do this in your email flow on Klaviyo/Shopify email + forms etc. Digital downloads & digital products apps work off of orders on your store, and definitely not worth it if you’re setting up lead magnets like free downloads.

Klaviyo seems really expensive. Shopify is terrible. Every single normal function, that is part of gumroad for free for example, costs money. You need endless extra apps and it adds on more and more and more.

It’s more that Shopify is not designed from the ground up for digital downloads/products. And I get that there’s a lot of apps, but it also means that you can do pretty much anything on Shopify with a combination of them.

For your case, I think you can do something like this -

  1. Use Shopify Forms to collect their email and other details.
  2. Use Shopify Flow or Email to send them a download immediately after.

This shouldn’t be expensive; so I highly recommend exploring it. :slightly_smiling_face:
