Google Ads Conversion Tracking Not Firing

I followed the Google Ads conversion tracking guide here: https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/promoting-marketing/analyze-marketing/tracking-adwords-conversions

When I test to see if the conversion tracking is firing I’m not seeing the Conversion Tag on the thank you page.

Here’s an example order on my Shopify site: https://drinkvolley.com/25983189039/orders/c927f6aca230172feedfd9bec2c5f472

The global site tag is showing when I use Tag Assistant, just not the conversion event snippet.

Any idea why this is happening and how I can debug?

Hey @faisalgrowth

If the global site tag is showing up but not the conversion event snippet on your Shopify thank you page, there could be several reasons for this. Here’s a step-by-step approach to debug the issue:

1. Check the Placement of the Conversion Tag:

  • Ensure that you’ve placed the conversion tag correctly in the “Additional Scripts” section of the checkout settings in Shopify. This ensures the tag fires on the thank you page after a purchase.

2. Tag Assistant:

  • You mentioned using Tag Assistant, which is great. When you’re on the thank you page, click on the Tag Assistant icon and see if there are any errors or warnings related to the conversion tag.

3. Use Browser Developer Tools:

  • Right-click on your thank you page and select “Inspect” or “Inspect Element”.
  • Go to the “Console” tab and look for any errors. Sometimes, JavaScript errors on the page can prevent tags from firing.
  • In the “Elements” tab, search (Ctrl + F or Cmd + F) for the conversion label or ID to see if the tag is present in the page source.

4. Check for Ad Blockers:

  • Ensure you don’t have any ad blockers enabled in your browser, as they can prevent tags, especially ad-related ones, from firing.

5. Ensure No Redirection:

  • Make sure there’s no immediate redirection on the thank you page that might prevent the conversion tag from firing.

6. Recheck the Conversion Tag Setup:

  • Go back to your Google Ads account and ensure you’ve copied the conversion tag correctly. Sometimes, missing a small part of the tag can prevent it from firing.

7. Test with Google Tag Manager (GTM):

  • If you’re using GTM, ensure that the trigger for the conversion tag is set up correctly. The trigger should be based on the thank you page URL or some other unique element on the thank you page.

8. Check Google Ads Account:

  • Ensure that the conversion action is still active in your Google Ads account. If it’s removed or paused, the tag might not fire.

9. Wait:

  • Sometimes, there’s a delay between when a conversion happens and when it shows up in Google Ads. Wait for a few hours and check again.

Remember, setting up conversion tracking can be tricky, and sometimes the smallest oversight can prevent the tag from firing. It’s essential to be thorough in your debugging process.

Hi Azam,

Thanks for your reply. I’ve done all those and still not seeing the conversion tracking tag show up on the Tag Assistant. What’s strange is that I can see the tag when I click View Page Source.

Hey mate, I had the same issue this morning but I resolved it. For anyone else that is trying to resolve this query, try fire up the tracking on a different browser. I used it on Microsoft Edge, instead of Chrome (which is my day to day use). Hope this helps

I am having issues with conversion tracking too. Everything was working and is working except the checkout purchase conversion. We had issues where there were high risk orders coming in and I had to made a Flow to only charge the cards if the fraud risk wasn’t high. This is built into the Shopify Flow app with a template. But now it looks like maybe the purchase conversion is no longer working. I can’t think of anything else that could cause it. I also see that if I use the Google troubleshoot option I go through the site and add the product to the cart. But as soon as you are redirected to the “shop” purchase checkout section the box has disappeared for troubleshooting and it is not registering the conversion.
