Google Discrimination

Topic summary

A Christian apparel Shopify store reports poor visibility for key search terms and suspects bias, noting peers say paid placement is necessary. The owner can find the site by name but not for terms like “Christian Tee-shirts,” and asks for ways to avoid heavy ad spend.

A respondent argues Google’s rankings aren’t faith-specific and depend on SEO and time. Paid PPC ads can immediately surface as sponsored results, while organic rankings rise slowly.

The respondent reviewed the site, saw prior feedback applied, and praised the niche, products, and clear messaging. They believe a few tweaks could accelerate results and offered pro bono help via email.

Outcome: The store owner accepted the pro bono assistance and will follow up.

Status: Ongoing with planned optimization support; no definitive technical fix yet. Likely next steps include refining SEO and considering PPC.

Key terms: SEO (search engine optimization—improving content/structure to rank organically). PPC (pay-per-click—paid ads that appear as sponsored search results).

I don’t know how many Christian Shopify business are out there but I do want to ask this question. How many of you have noticed a discrimination against Christian businesses when it comes to google placement? I have tried everything I can think of short of shelling out hundreds if not thousands of dollars to be placed on googles search pages. I can find myself if i look myself up but if I look up Christian Tee-shirts or any other key phrase. I’m not even on the list. I see other Christian businesses on there, and when I reach out to them to see how they are getting on there I get the same answer… MONEY! In turn MONEY TALKS when it comes to getting on Google as a Christian business. Dose anyone have any ideas on how to get around this?

@crossovertees - if it gives you any consolation, Google discriminates against everyone. No matter what anyone tells you, getting to show in a palatable position in a Google search requires solid SEO and time. Yes, throwing lots of money at ppc campaigns will increase your exposure, and definitely position your store closer to the top as a “sponsored” search result, organic results are much slower.

I also want to mention that I saw your previous post regarding slow sales, you were definitely given some awesome feedback, and after looking at your website it does appear that you have put some of that into play. I have a few ideas as well and wouldn’t be opposed to offering you some “pro bono” assistance because I think you have the makings for a real winner here. You are in a strong and well-defined niche, your products look great, and in reading through, you have a very strong and clear message, and your passion shows. I think making a few tweaks could really get the ball rolling for you and it would be a shame if you got frustrated or burned out before your time. Circle back and let me know your thoughts, I also have my email below if that is easier. Paul

Yes that would be great. Thank you.
